Fashion trends are timeless. What comes, goes. What went, comes back. That is the beauty of art and rarely anyone understands it better than athletes. In addition to a mastery of their sport, MLB players also know how to rep apparel and some of them recently weighed in on fashion trends.
Perhaps it’s a shame Derek Jeter was not present to give his take on baggy suits or Air Jordans because, in the 2000s, Captain Clutch defined an era of style. After all, it earned him a place in the GQ Sports Style Hall of Fame’s inaugural class this year. But not to worry, one of his equally dapper former teammates answered the question of style recently, evoking the Jordan Brand.

Ever since Michael Jordan made the decision to sign with Nike in 1984, his signature shoe line has outlasted most other athletic brands. And baseball players are appreciative.
When video creators Bat Boys asked former ballplayers present at the Players Alliance event about the greatest fashion trends of all time, most referred to the iconic shoes.
Former Yankee and Jeter’s teammate CC Sabathia said, “Jordans. From the ’80s to the late 2000s, I’ll say Jordans.” Pedro Martinez had much the same answer, “I’ll probably say Jordans. I don’t know anything that has lasted as long and been as consistent as the Jordans.”

Although they didn’t name the NBA legend’s eponymous brand, two more retired baseballers referred to shoes.
Gary Sheffield was all about his kicks, “Always my shoes. If my shoes are tight, it’ll make everything else right.” So was Eric Davis, who made a bold statement, “It’s when I started the high tops…now they know.” A few others branched out to opinions on clothes.
Ken Griffey Jr. Opines on the Y2K Aesthetic
From low-rise pants to baggy jeans, the 2000s fashion era redefined personal aesthetics. For most athletes, the focus was on shoes, but some preferred the unique clothing choices of that generation.
For baseball legend Ken Griffey Jr., it’s all about his personal style. “My swag. I got different swag for different occasions. Now my kids may not understand that sometimes, but it’s my swag,” he told Bat Boys.

Chris Young, a Texan native, referred to some classics only found in Houston. “They only existed in the Houston area and that was starched pants. Take ’em to the cleaners, you get them heavy starch. You still see people with a crease, but our crease was so sharp that you can cut a piece of paper with it.”
Edwin Jackson had a unique response, “I would have to do the race car jackets. I always wanted to Tony the Tiger race car jacket.”
Baggy clothes, slim fits, and euro fit also made the cut, with everyone’s own personal taste seeping in.
