Injuries and professional sports go hand in hand. The unfortunate side effect of having a sport as one’s career means an increased frequency of hospital visits. While in the worst cases, injuries are career-ending, most people shoulder through it. Or some, like New York Yankees pitcher Frankie Montas, have to undergo surgery for them.

Since Spring Training for the 2023 season is about to start, baseball fans are worried Montas won’t be able to make it. Not only that, it’s almost certain that the 29-year-old will have to miss the first half of the upcoming season. Sept. 16, 2022, was the last time Montas pitched before his shoulder showed signs of inflammation. Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone has commented that the pitcher may be able to make it to the second half. But fans are still concerned.

Jeff Passan of ESPN tweeted the news about Montas’ surgery, reiterating what Boone said earlier. Montas, who had only been traded last August, was expected to play a big role in this season. But from the looks of it, the Bronx Bombers will have to wait to see the results of this trade.

While anyone rarely expressed concern over the upcoming medical procedure, most thought the Yankees should have traded someone else. But most called for blood where GM Brian Cashman was concerned.

Since the injury was discovered last season, perhaps the front office shouldn’t have waited so long to get the surgery done before February.

Since Montas was supposed to go fifth after Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Luis Severino, and Nestor Cortes, the Pinstripes will now need to find a replacement. After a busy off-season with trades and deal extensions, the Yankees made deals with all players headed to arbitration.

Montas signed a $7.5 million deal with the team, but not even two days later, they announced the pitcher would be missing the first month of the upcoming season. In addition to the disheartening news, left-handed pitcher Nestor Cortes may miss Opening Day because of a strained right hamstring.
