Is the world ready for a Trent Grisham MVP run this year? It might sound ridiculous at first, but with how the Yankees’ offense is performing right now, it’s not entirely out of the question. The Yankees’ offense is so potent that their No. 9 hitter has been their most effective player over the past two games—Oswaldo Cabrera on Friday and Trent Grisham on Saturday. Yes, you read that right: Grisham, a centerfielder known more for his glove than his bat, stepped up against the Pirates and delivered a performance that left even Carlos Rodon’s wife cheering.
Grisham’s journey with the Yankees began in 2023 when the Padres traded him for $5 million. His move to New York got overshadowed by the blockbuster trade of Juan Soto, but as Soto left the Bronx, Grisham began to see more opportunities. A solid defensive centerfielder, Grisham has occasionally flashed the bat as well. In 2024, he posted 9 home runs and 31 RBIs in 79 games, and while projections for 2025 have him at 6 HRs and 21 RBIs, his recent form suggests those numbers could rise.
“Can we talk about how good he is….LETS GO!” Ashley Rodon, wife of Carlos Rodon, shared the clutch moment of Grisham against the Pirates. What made her spellbound was Grisham’s hit when things were looking grim for the Yankees. On a rainy Saturday at PNC Park, with the Yankees leading by just a narrow margin, Grisham delivered two homers to help push the Yankees to a 10–4 victory. The Pirates’ crowd had been roaring, but Grisham’s timely blast silenced them, reaffirming that he’s a player who can come through when it matters most.

So, what’s on the table for Grisham this year? For those unaware, the last three seasons went below par for Grisham with the bat (87 wRC+ combined), but there is plenty of optimism this year, considering he is getting more exposure on the field. ZiPS forecasts a 104 wRC+ for him in 2025, which, while optimistic, isn’t entirely out of reach. The Yankees, in their current youth-driven approach, could very well be counting on Grisham to deliver even more than expected.
Grisham’s journey towards leading the Yankees
Trent Grisham’s journey to the Yankees wasn’t some overnight headline-grabber. Before landing in the Bronx, he was a steady presence for the Padres — the kind of guy who let his game do the talking.
Now, under the bright lights of Yankee Stadium, Grisham is starting to show there’s more to his game than just a slick glove. When Giancarlo Stanton went down early in the offseason, the door cracked open, and Grisham didn’t hesitate. With Aaron Judge sliding into the DH spot, Grisham was handed the keys to the outfield. Talk about perfect timing!

What’s your perspective on:
Can Trent Grisham's bat finally match his glove and lead the Yankees to October glory?
Have an interesting take?
The Yankees’ outfield picture looks stacked on paper — Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Jasson Domínguez from left to right. But with Judge now shifting to DH duty and Stanton sidelined, it’s Trent Grisham who’s seized the spotlight. One injury, one lineup shuffle, and suddenly, Grisham’s front and center.
And honestly? The Yankees aren’t complaining. They now have a steady glove in the outfield with a little pop to spare. Now, although Grisham flashed his defensive magic and teased some upside at the plate, crowning him MVP just yet feels a little premature. If he hovers around a .190 batting average like last season, well… he might snag a few defensive accolades, but that MVP trophy is a mountain still waiting to be climbed.
Either way, with the way the Yankees’ offense is cooking, it might be time to rethink their postseason projections. October baseball in the Bronx suddenly feels a whole lot more real.
