Baseball players play the game, but sometimes don’t change the result. And with umpires now exercising control over so many aspects of the game, their effect can certainly no longer be ignored. And that was all too true for the New York Yankees as they took on the Houston Astros on Sunday. So much, in fact, that the fans picked a side. And some fans’ reactions were more telling than others.

With the New York Yankees battling their way to an AL Wild Card game, every matchup counts. And when a play doesn’t go your way, you look to pin down a reason for it. For the Bronx Bombers, that appeared to be clearly the umpires. And fans close to the action made it known.

Negative Umpiring or Right Call?

The Pinstripes took on the Astros in the series decider, hoping to put together a post-season run for 2023. Starting pitcher Carlos Rodon on the mound, the Yankees would have hoped for a better performance with the starter conceding 5 runs before being taken off the mound in the 3rd innings.

However, his wife Ashley Rodon took to social media to point out that it wasn’t the pitching at fault at all. It was the umpiring that was causing the bad performances. Tweeting a set of screengrabs of the pitch maps from Carlos’ pitched innings to several batters, Ashley captioned the posts with a ‘

‘ emoji, possibly harkening at umpire Angel Hernandez.

Pitcher Carlos Rodon has not had the best time at Yankee Stadium. With the star coming off a 60 day IL in July, he is certainly underperforming to his standards. But while his performances have been lacking recently, the star’s latest outing was marred with calls of faulty umpiring from MLB umpire Angel Hernandez.

Fans React to Controversial Call from Umpire

Angel Hernandez is no stranger to controversy. The umpire has been the subject of several game deciding calls in crunch games for franchises.

And while human error is but to be expected, the umpire has gained a reputation for missing out on crucial decisions which can affect the flow of the game. And the fans made what they think of Hernandez well known.

As the game went on, Hernandez didn’t let up in his pursuit to give baseball fans something to be upset about. With Wandy Peralta on the mound, Hernandez called a balk on a routine throw to 1st base. And fans and commentators alike were not enthused.

Some fans even accounted Hernandez on counts of favoritism.

But what do you think? Were Hernandez’s calls warranted? And if not, then how do you see the game panning out? Could the Yankees have snagged a victory to mark a run into the post-season?
