MLB free agency has been seeing heavy activity in the present day. Among the elite aces available in the market at present, Jordan Montgomery deserves special mention. While Monty won his first World Series this year with the Texas Rangers, his previous records reflect a similar consistency, making him one of the best pitching options for any team to go after. The Boston Red Sox, in particular, are in desperate need of a starting pitcher. However, reports state that the team is “unwilling” to go after Monty for obvious reasons. Undoubtedly, his former team, the St. Louis Cardinals, “could take advantage of this situation”.

If the recent news is any proof, the Red Sox completely taking themselves off the list of prospective teams can mean only one thing. It makes way for other teams to put their names in contention. Among the teams currently scouting the market, the St. Louis Cardinals might just turn out to be the best fit for Jordan Montgomery’s dynamic skill set.

Why does a Jordan Montgomery and Cardinals reunion make sense?

Several reasons caused the Red Sox’s interest in Jordan Montgomery to decline, as mentioned before. The financial bits of it stand out the most. According to FanSided.com, the team is “unwilling to spend for Montgomery”, despite their dire need of upgrading their pitching rotation. MassLive reported that some officials laughed at the idea of spending a lot on Monty, considering their tight budget for the next season.

With the Red Sox permanently out of the picture, the Cardinals are now poised to make a move for Jordan, as he will likely have fewer competing teams vying for his services. The team already had a pre-existing interest in him. The recent turn in events only makes their stance stronger.

Moreover, his predicted contract value of $140 million for six years (per ESPN) that made the Red Sox back out will be more than affordable for the St. Louis clubhouse. Their previous record for the biggest contract for a pitcher was for Sonny Gray. The team locked him down for the next three seasons, starting in 2024, for $75 million.

Compared to Gray’s $25 million salary, paying Monty $23.3 million a year will not be an issue for the team. Especially considering that they know what they will get with him. Mony’s record from this season under the St. Louis banner stands at 108 strikeouts with a 3.42 ERA in 121 innings pitched.
