Back in September 2014. New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter walked the box for one final time in Pinstripes, and the shortstop, doing what he does best, clutched, and smashed a walk-off single to carry the Yankees home. Once again, one last time, the same person who’s been doing it for years and years, etched in the annals of baseball history, Mr. November, Captain Clutch, Derek Jeter, for one last time at the Bronx in Pinstripes. Sounds emotional, doesn’t it?
But did the tough, aggressive, competitive, and fearless Jeter feel these emotions? Did the slugger ever let loose? Not on the field, he didn’t. True to form, Jeter kept his emotions in check, even for a moment that blatantly called for emotions and tears. The five-time World Champion simply soaked it in and celebrated with his team. But that doesn’t mean Captain Clutch was immune to the emotional turmoil and the disappointment of being decked in Pinstripes for one last time. In fact, the strong Derek Jeter even let loose, as he revealed in an interview with NBC 6 South Florida in 2018.

Three years after leaving the Bronx, Derek Jeter partook in a bid for minimum ownership in the National League’s Miami Marlins. Eventually, after becoming a minority owner, he was appointed as the Marlins CEO in 2017. During this time, he appeared in an interview with NBC 6 South Florida, where he candidly spoke about the time he actually processed the emotions about his retirement and fell into tears.
On being asked if he cried after retirement, Captain Clutch responded by saying, “Yes, I did, by myself. I did when I had an opportunity to reflect on a career finally being over. I think I was in the bathroom, and I shed a few tears.”
However, while defending himself, Jeter did particularly mention that he was still in control of himself while saying that “It was a controlled cry.”
