This time, the New York Met’s owner Steve Cohen is in the news! But not for a good reason, though. It seems Cohen is facing criticism for not paying Pete Alonso the sum that many feel he deserves. The Mets declined Pete’s long-term contract desire. It looks like they want to focus on younger players now. So, is this something that may have led to Alonso not being given the money that he deserves?
Alonso was looking for a long-term deal, but the New York Mets were not interested. David Stearns, the president of baseball operations for the Mets, wants to add younger players to their lineup. They even signed Juan Soto to a huge deal. As a result, it seems the people running the ball club are now at the receiving end of rebuke from people like Keith McPherson.

It’s not as if the Pete Alonso sweepstakes have shrunk considerably. He is dissatisfied with the state of his free agency market so far. The Mets made a blockbuster trade by signing Juan Soto. However, they aren’t willing to pay Alonso a good amount for a long-term contract. On January 10, Keith McPherson stated on WFan Sports Radio, “This guy is made out of money. We already saw him trade away contracts.”
He added, “Now, all of a sudden, you can’t do right by Pete Alonso? Because you have young talent coming up? Because David Stearns is telling you to evaluate the young guys?” McPherson criticized Steve Cohen for not paying Pete, despite trading various other contracts. Additionally, he believes that Pete has “earned” compensation which he deserves for all of his years of arduous labor playing for the Mets.
Pete Alonso had a batting average of.249 with 781 hits, 226 home runs, 586 RBIs, and scored 493 runs in 846 games with the Mets. Given that he is 30 years of age and there is uncertainty on how he may play in the next couple of years, David Stearns seems uninterested as he wants to bring younger players in. Thus, it is yet to be seen whether a Mets-Alonso reunion is on the cards or not. But that’s not all; the Polar Bear’s camp is ready with a new offer for the Mets. Sounds exciting, right?
Pete Alonso’s new contract desire makes his reunion with the Mets likely
Due to the shrinking sweepstakes and the Mets seemingly uninterested in paying for a long-term contract, Pete Alonso has come up with a short-term offer—a three-year contract. The deal is exclusively put on the table for the Mets with an opt-out option. If he stays with the Mets, he will continue to break many more records because he is one of the team’s best hitters. Therefore, it is critical that the team gives Pete Alonso the recognition he deserves. But it’s difficult to judge whether the negotiations have improved or not without knowing the actual amount. However, this doesn’t end here!

Considering that Alonso is now open for a short-term contract, teams on the fence previously might look to have him on board. Teams like the Boston Red Sox and Blue Jays have already chipped in, showing interest in the first baseman. With an impressive record, he can be a great addition to any team. Not only in terms of performance but also in terms of how he will mentor the team’s younger players.

The Boston Red Sox seem to be the prime contenders in the race for Pete Alonso. They are keen to get him for a respectable amount; however, that’s not revealed yet. But given that Pete Alonso’s wife is from Boston, she may have an influence on the decision he makes in the free agency trade. Do you think Pete Alonso may go to the Red Sox?
