It only takes one moment to change the narrative. And for Spencer Jones, that moment might be now. With Giancarlo Stanton sidelined due to an unexpected injury, the Yankees now have an open spot on their Opening Day roster—and Jones might just be the one to fill it. The buzz only grew louder when he smashed the first home run of 2025, a two-run blast straight over the left field at TD Ballpark. Could this be the start of something bigger?

Since his arrival at the Yankees’ camp, the six-foot-six-inch Spencer Jones has been compared to the lefty-hitting Aaron Judge, given his massive power potential and size. However, they cannot be compared, given that Judge has achieved the MVP two times, while Jones is yet to play in the Triple-A. So, why is there a call for the promotion of Spencer?

During the Yankees’ second exhibition game, the Automated Ball-Strike system was tried out for Jones’ home run at-bat. Right after a strike was called on the 3-2 pitch, Pereira managed to challenge the plate umpire Adam Beck’s call while taking first base on the walk, and Jones made a blast to the left at the Blue Jays’ ballpark, hitting 17 homers in 2024, with a .789 OPS, 78 RBIs, and 25 stolen bases across the 34 attempts. And that’s it!

Fans cannot keep calm anymore, as they expect the promotion of Spencer Jones, highlighting Jones’ potential with the two-run homer. Aaron Boone, the Yankees’ manager, also appreciated the call made by Jones and felt quite impressed with his power-hitting ability. And now with Giancarlo Stanton out of the game, Dominic Smith may be a probable option; however, given his lackluster performance, where he had a .241 batting average and .671 OPS, Jones making it to Opening Day seems very likely. Isn’t it?

Fans react to Spencer Jones making a spot in the opening-day roster

Rightly said—one’s loss may be the opportunity for another! It’s quite true that the Yankees did not have someone to make it big on the opening-day roster until Spencer Jones showed his true mettle. One user on Instagram said, “Just make the opening day roster. Start him young,” given that Jones is just 23 years old and has a lot of potential. His speed and power have been impressive in the minor league games, and the outfielder managed to acquire 68 stolen bases while making 33 home runs too.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Spencer Jones the next Aaron Judge, or is it too soon to make that call?

Echoing his statement, another user commented, “Bro, is that left-handed judge wtf,” citing similarity with the playing style of Aaron Judge. Based on the user’s statement, if there’s someone who can come close to replicating Judge’s athleticism, movement, hitting power, and size, it is the Yankees’ young top prospect—Spencer Jones. Sounds true, right?

During the exhibition game where Jones made his debut, the swing of the bat was a bit late; however, he still managed to make a tremendous hit, which one of the commenters believed, stating, “He was late too; that’s some insane pop right there.” All thanks to the Automated Ball Strike system that helped in the strikeout call getting overturned.

An ardent fan even felt that Spencer is much better than Juan Soto, and so they don’t need someone, citing, “DONT NEED JUAN SOTO WHEN YA GOT SPENCER SMELL YA JONES.” The comparison was, though, made in a fun and frolic way, as Juan Soto signed with the Mets, leaving the Yankees in 2024. Given that Spencer is much younger and has great hitting power, the Yankees’ camp could groom him to be better with time.

Finally, another user on Instagram made a similar comment, bringing a similarity with Aaron Judge. The user believed that the load-up was very similar to that of Judge, although a bit unconventional, and he said, “His load-up looks just like Judge’s; it’s uncanny. Not the entire swing, just watch the load-up right before.”
