Super Bowl LVII was exhilarating to watch and for the second time in four seasons, the Kansas City Chiefs emerged as champions. Patrick Mahomes, despite being injured, became a superhero on the field and turned the game around near the end. Talk about a scene straight out of a thrilling sports anime. But another reason to watch the big game was the half-time performance by nine-time Grammy award winner Rihanna.
The 34-year-old singer is popular for her R&B songs mixed with pop and dance music, which has catapulted her to global fame. Everyone knows at least one of her extremely popular songs, either through the radio, the internet, or that iconic Tom Holland performance. Although her solo music is sensational, Rihanna’s famous collaborators also lend their voices to her music here and there. However, even after RiRi’s great performance, the New York Mets manager Buck Showalter did not hesitate to take a dig at Rihanna with a Shakira comparison.

The Umbrella singer primarily produces pop music with dance vibes, which is usually popular with youngsters. In a pop culture twist, however, even the older generation includes many Rihanna fans. The Mets pod, a podcast dedicated to the Queens team, recently interviewed Buck Showalter. When the question of the Super Bowl came up, host Connor Rogers asked whether Showalter watched it because of football or Rihanna.
The 66-year-old deflected the question at first and said his interests only lay in baseball. Then, on some reflection, he had this to say about the singer. “I like Rihanna. I actually like her. I love some of her music; most of it, as a matter of fact. I like a lot of stuff she did with Drake. It was very impressive.”
But he concluded his statement by comparing her to Shakira’s iconic performance in 2020. “Not quite as good as Shakira,” he said. Because Showalter is actually a huge fan of the Latina singer!
