Have you ever heard a story that makes you believe in second chances? That’s Jeff Hoffman’s 2023 and 2024 seasons. He was a highly touted prospect when the Rockies drafted him in 2014. But his big league career wasn’t really going according to the plans. Over 348.1 innings pitched from 2016-2022, the 32-year-old posted a 5.68 ERA—a stat line that would make any pitcher question their place in the game.
Then, in March 2023, the 1993-born baseball player was released by the Reds. Hoffman signed a minor league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies – might not be a glamorous move for the New York native pitcher! But hey, it was a shot. And after posting a not-so-fine 7.00 ERA in nine minor league games, the clock was ticking. Hoffman’s opt-out date was coming up, and he had one last chance to prove he could still hang in the big leagues.

Bryce Harper was recovering from Tommy John surgery. The day was April 21, 2023, when this 2X NL MVP needed someone to throw for live batting practice. Jeff Hoffman was called to Citizens Bank Park, assisting in Harper’s recovery. For Hoffman, it was like a World Series game. And according to Harper, something clicked. He was impressed. This was the time when Hoffman was promoted from minor to Major League Baseball.

Before his opt-out date, the Phillies called him up and moved him to the bullpen. Hoffman suddenly had a new chance with the club, especially with Seranthony Domínguez’s seasonal failure and José Alvarado’s injury. He rose to become one of baseball’s greatest relievers during the following two seasons. In 2023, his 2.28 ERA placed sixth out of all pitchers with 100 or more appearances. After two years of dominating the bullpen, Hoffman finally made a splash in the summer.

A full circular moment for Jeff Hoffman and the Blue Jays
Hoffman was about to sign a three-year, $40 million deal with the Baltimore Orioles. He was fresh off a run of success in which he dominated for the Phillies. So, what appeared to be a done deal at first MLB analyst Robert Murray claimed that the agreement collapsed at the last minute. Why?
It seems that the O’s pulled out of the contract because of significant concerns about his physical state. This is where things went wild. The Toronto Blue Jays, who had drafted Hoffman all those years ago, approached just as it appeared that his market could be drying up. Jeff Hoffman agreed to a three-year, $33 million contract with the Jays, with the possibility of a $39 million extension due to incentives.

But let’s pause and think about what all of this means. There’s a real sense of redemption here. Sure, the Orioles’ deal didn’t go through, but maybe, just maybe, that setback was a blessing in disguise. Toronto, seeing the full picture and knowing Jeff Hoffman’s potential, stepped in and offered a contract that rewarded him. Not every player gets this kind of opportunity after a deal falls apart. But for Hoffman, it has always been like sudden turning points. Don’t you think?
