The tension between the Nationals fans and Bryce Harper shows no signs of fading. As the Philadelphia Phillies’ first baseman stepped onto the field for Opening Day, he faced a chorus of boos from the very fans he once thrilled. Despite going 1-for-4 with a home run and leading his team to victory against the Washington Nationals, Harper found himself at the center of controversy yet again, facing a wave of negativity from the Nationals faithful. But what’s fueling this ongoing tension?

It all started when Harper left the Nationals for the Phillies. He became Public Enemy No. 1 for a lot of Nationals fans. We all know that the Nationals-Phillies rivalry, and so Harper’s exit, wasn’t received quite well by the fans. They’ve made it clear that they can’t stand him, and the same thing happened on Opening Day. Even though he hit a home run, they responded with only boos.

Instead of being upset, the Phillies’ star was actually happy. And why not, after all he led his team to a 7-3 victory in 10 innings against the Nationals. When asked about the booing, Harper coldly responded, “I love coming in here and playing in this stadium. I’ve got a lot of great memories in here as well. Everywhere I go, it’s exactly like this. Some places are louder than others. It’s all the same.” His statement shows that he’s here to play and prove himself, and all the outside noise doesn’t matter as long as he gives his best for the team.

Despite the cold reception, Harper’s return to the nation’s capital signifies his special relationship with everyone there. He praised how people admire him and recognise him as a player: “All the workers, really — I love my relationship with them a lot. Going through the tunnel and talking to everybody, they still tell me they love me.” And fans? He acknowledged that fan reactions—positive or negative—are simply part of the game.

But this isn’t the first time Harper has shown his potential. He previously hit five home runs on Opening Day while playing for the Nationals. But this was his first Opening Day with the Phillies; that’s what frustrates Nationals fans the most. Seeing one of their former stars shine for their rival team on such a big stage. It’s hard for them to watch him make it big while wearing a Phillies uniform. But since they can’t do anything else, they booed.

Regardless of their anger, the eight-time NL All-Star “loves hitting in this ballpark.” And who knows? He might just get his name etched in the record books as well.

Bryce Harper set to join rare club

Since the Phillies’ victory over the Nationals, Harper has been making headlines. Despite being booed by fans throughout the stadium, he managed to hit a first-pitch fastball from Lucas Sims for a home run, which helped the Phillies take a lead against the Nationals in the seventh inning. And with a home run, he is set to join a rare club on Opening Day, as Sarah Langs of MLB.com confirmed.

He is set to join the exclusive group of players who have homered in their first plate appearances on Opening Day multiple times during the expansion era, since 1961. Other players with the most home runs in their first plate appearances are Frank Robinson (4), Mike Trout (3), Vladimir Guerrero Sr. (3), Jeff Kent (3), Darryl Strawberry (3), and Brooks Robinson (3).

Harper already achieved this feat twice before with the Nationals. He needed just one more to make it onto the list. His home run on Thursday marked the sixth time that he has hit one during his team’s season opener. Coming off a season where he batted an average of .285 and hit 30 home runs while helping the Nationals win the National League East, Harper has done it again. With the 415-foot solo homer off a 96 mph fastball, he is finally on the verge of etching his name in the record books.
