The 22-year-old phenom, Roki Sasaki of the Chiba Lotte Marines hit headlines for all the wrong reasons. The MVP and Rookie of the Year – 2022, is entangled in a contract dispute with his team. The embroilment has led to a break-up in Sasaki and the Marines’ relations. What’s worse is that it has also caused a rift between him and the Japan Professional Baseball Players Association (JPBPA). The dispute is just one part of it.

Sasaki made the shocking move of withdrawing from the JPBPA. This association is the union representing all professional Japanese baseball players. The man known for throwing a perfect game, drawing away is a huge blow to the union. It is also a sign of growing tensions between him and the Japanese establishment of Baseball. But how did it all start?

I started when the youthful ace expressed a desire to play in Major League Baseball. He submitted a request to be posted to the MLB in November 2022, however, his request was turned down by the Marines. This decision did not sit well with ‘the Monster of the Reiwa Era’ causing widespread criticism. This fueled Sasaki’s anger further. The 2021 NPB debutant has established that he wants to play in the MLB, with or without the Marines’ approval.

Sasaki’s actions outraged the JPBPA. The association sees this situation as the prodigy putting his personal interests above the interests of all Japanese baseball players. The JPBPA has also expressed concern that his withdrawal would set a bad precedent. All this has caused the association to worry that other players will follow Sasaki’s lead which is not good for the union.

This fallout is likely to be felt for years to come. It is worth considering how the Big League is going to interpret this. While Sasaki’s dream to play in the MLB is still alive, his withdrawal from the JPBPA has added a layer of difficulty to achieve it.

What’s Next for Sasaki?

It is cloudy, what the future holds for the flamethrower. It’s possible that he could still be posted next offseason, but the Marines’ stance on the matter would have to change. Sasaki could however try to negotiate a trade to an MLB team. But that comes with a different set of problems. They would require him to sign a long-term contract with his new team. Now that’s a difficult proposition for someone who is yet to be a free agent.
