Derek Jeter is hands down one of the greatest Yankees of all time. From former players to fans, to celebrities, to athletes from other sports, everyone can attest to Jeter’s greatness. As expected, Jeter was added to the MLB Hall of Fame with a record 99.75%. In 2017, the NY Yankees introduced Jeter into the Monument Park and retired his jersey number 2. However, Yankee general manager, believed that along with retiring Jeter’s jersey, the Yanks should retire the label of the “Captain” as well.

Over the years, the NY Yankees have made it palpable that they don’t elect a captain until they find someone who’s deserving enough. Similarly, after Don Mattingly’s retirement in 1995, the Yanks took 8 years to find Jeter capable enough for captaincy. Subsequently, that decision will go down in the MLB and Yankee record books.
Markedly, since Derek Jeter’s retirement in 2014, the Yankees haven’t succeeded in finding a new captain.
Will Jeter be the last Yankee captain?
In an interview from 2015, before Jeter’s jersey retirement, Brian Cashman talks about Jeter’s greatness as a captain. Cashman believed Jeter was “perfect” for the role. Full of praises for Jeter, Cashman iterated, “Derek is a once-in-a-lifetime player that we’re lucky we had.”
While specifically mentioning that he does not have any official and administrative say over retiring the captaincy label, Cashman talked about how Jeter was so perfect for the role. He said, “Derek wore it so well for so long.” Cashman further added, “I wouldn’t give up another captain’s title to anyone else.”

Cashman continues to talk about the lack of obvious choice for the role of captaincy. He stated, “We have a number of different people that are very strong leaders and high-quality individuals. That doesn’t mean you have to put a ‘C’ on it.”
All in all, since 2014, the Yanks have failed to find a new captain. As we speak, the quest for a new captain only continues.
