Spring training is right around the corner, and it’s time to shake off the offseason rust! With just a week left before players report, you’d think every team has locked in their roster. But one of the biggest names in baseball hasn’t. It looks like Yankees GM Brian Cashman still has moves up his sleeve.

After losing Juan Soto, the Yankees went on a signing spree, landing Max Fried, Paul Goldschmidt, and Cody Bellinger. Yet, despite these big additions, some analysts believe the Bronx Bombers aren’t done. The question is—what are they waiting for? A proven bat at third base.

MLB insiders think Brian Cashman is not done making moves

Yankees insider Meredith Marakovitz joined in a conversation with MLB Network to talk about the Yankees’ position in 2025. Marakovitz said, “Brian Cashman did a tremendous job in pivoting and going out there and getting guys that will make this a more complete roster.” When asked about what the Yanks are going to do about third base? Her answer was, “Right now they don’t have a ton of options when it comes to third base. It’s going to be DJ LeMahieu or Oswaldo Cabrera that are in the mix there. Something tells me that Brian Cashman is still waiting.”

Marakovitz Also added that she would not be surprised if the team finds someone on third base before Opening day. But right now, it’s either going to be LeMahieu or Cabrera. For third base, there is an option in the free market as well as in the trade market. Veteran player Alex Bregman is still unsigned and up for grabs, and the Cardinals want to trade Nolan Arenado. While the pinstripes have not shown an interest in Bregman, maybe because of his steep asking price they have shown interest in a trade.

The New York Yankees’ quest for an infielder this offseason has been an unsteady ride

What’s your perspective on:

Will Brian Cashman pull off a last-minute trade for Arenado, or stick with LeMahieu?

Have an interesting take?

After letting Gleyber Torres walk, GM Brian Cashman initially pursued top-tier options like Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado, only to settle for a string of underwhelming candidates. With the internal infield options now limited to DJ LeMahieu, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Oswald Peraza, the Yankees’ need for a reliable upgrade has never been more pressing.

Fortunately for the Yankees, there might be a silver lining emerging from the St. Louis Cardinals’ situation. Cardinals’ GM John Mozeliak, desperate to unload Arenado’s hefty contract, could be the Yankees’ ticket to securing a game-changing talent at a bargain price. With the Yankees already housing Arenado’s teammate, Paul Goldschmidt, there’s potential leverage for New York to pull this off. If Cashman acts quickly, he could bypass a more aggressive bidding war that could arise if Alex Bregman signs elsewhere, especially with division rivals like the Red Sox also in need of an upgrade.

The timing is crucial for the Yankees, who stand to benefit from a potentially lower prospect cost due to Mozeliak’s urgent need to move Arenado. Names like Will Warren, Chase Hampton, and Roderick Arias could serve as solid trade pieces, but it’s clear that Arenado’s value has dipped amid St. Louis’ shifting priorities. If Cashman can strike while the iron is hot, the Yankees could land one of the game’s premier third basemen without parting with a significant chunk of their future, ultimately addressing one of their most glaring needs for 2025 and beyond.
