Home/MLB

Opening Day is almost here and every MLB team is finalizing its final roster ahead of the big-long season. While most big names will have a sure place, the fate of some players is still uncertain. The New York Mets, for one, are making their intentions clear about some of their prospects. Things aren’t looking good for Brett Baty and Mark Vientos as of now.

Baty is currently the no. 2 prospect on the team, while Vientos is no. 8, according to MLB Pipeline. Baty has put up good numbers ever since getting selected in the 2019 MLB draft. The third baseman finally made his debut in the big leagues last August, homering right on his first at-bat. Meanwhile, Vientos has consistently put up good numbers and had a considerable improvement this spring training.

And yet, the Mets have decided to option both players to Triple-A. Safe to say, the Metsies are not happy.

Fans are devastated to hear talented New York Mets players will be reassigned to Triple-A

MLB.com reported that the team officials held a personnel meeting on Saturday to discuss the fate of their players. General manager Billy Eppler and manager Buck Showalter were both present. And despite the players’ strong performances, the front office feels they would both serve better in Syracuse.

Additionally, a lot of other players will be reassigned to the minor leagues. Both Vientos and Baty have had strong camps, so it’s expected to see fans confused.

Cohen has commented on how he wants to develop a strong farm system before, but fans are questioning him.

Overall, the Mets fans are furious at the decision and believe Baty should be the starting third baseman.

Not only did Eppler compare these players to some other big talents, but he also wants Vientos and Baty to hit “development markers” before they continue in the major leagues.

Which players do the Mets want on the team instead?

The starting third baseman position will remain with Eduardo Escobar for now. He’s still the best option after hitting .321/.385/.596 with eight home runs last September. Instead of Vientos, either Darin Ruf or Tommy Pham will serve as the right-handed half of a platoon at DH with Daniel Vogelbach.

As of right now, the only way Vientos or Baty has a chance to return is if Escobar or Vogelbach suffer an injury. If they keep hitting the numbers, it’s uncertain what the other players’ fate might be.
