A few months after the passing of boxing icon Muhammad Ali at the age of 74, the former New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter, who was a great admirer of the boxing legend, delivered a heartfelt and compelling tribute to Ali while sitting alongside his wife, Lonnie Ali.
As a tribute to the legendary boxer, five-time World Champion Jeter decided to produce a book on the life of Muhammad Ali; who was not just a boxer, but an icon who inspired millions. Titled “Muhammad Ali Unfiltered,” Jeter Publishing created a comprehensive 200-plus page book about the Greatest, featuring rare images, quotes, and tributes.

In a promotional event for the book with Simon & Schuster Books, the charismatic shortstop and 14-time All-Star made sure to flatter Lonnie Ali with his heartfelt words on how Muhammad Ali changed the way the course of sports.
Derek Jeter said, “He was a fierce competitor. But more importantly, he understood the power and the impact he could use his platform for. And you know, he did that for the betterment of the world. Muhammad is someone who, he resonates with people even if you’re not a boxing fan. Whether you’re in this country or not in this country, everyone knows Muhammad Ali’s the greatest.”
While Derek Jeter stands as the undoubted modern-day icon of baseball, memories of Muhammad Ali are already inked in the history books of boxing. Both the sporting icons were really good friends. And the duo, once engaged in a showdown in 2004 at Minute-Maid Park.

During the 2004 All-Star game at Minute Maid Park, while the boxing icon was battling with Parkinson’s disease, he reached the ground to throw the ceremonious first pitch. However, shortly before pitching, Ali threw some air punches. Eventually, when the Yankees captain Derek Jeter walked up to the boxing icon, he jokingly threw a few more air punches toward Jeter.
