Horrific injuries, or even regular wounds, are part of an athlete’s life. A person might get knocked down again and again, but what matters is standing back up. Sounds preachy? But that’s exactly what Justin Turner did. Two weeks ago, the Red Sox player took a ball to the face against Tigers pitcher Matt Manning. Turner immediately fell to the ground, with blood pouring down his face.
Luckily – which is said very carefully – he didn’t have any long-term effects. No fractures and no concussions, only 16 stitches and a lot of swelling. Turner walked out of the field himself, albeit holding a towel to his face, as the crowd cheered for him. He later gave an account of what it was like in the aftermath, before getting to the ER. The third baseman got in his rest, but now, he’s back on the field.

Turner may have gone through a bad two weeks, but clearly, he couldn’t wait to get his hands on the bat once again. Things may have been different if his scans hadn’t come back clean, or if there had been a few broken teeth involved. But as of now, all’s good in Turner town. “Obviously, after something like that happens, you just want to get back in there and check off that box as soon as you can,” the Red Sox player told MLB.com.
He added, “It was good, it went really good. It’s something that you?ve got to try to put behind you. Obviously, that?s not easy to do, but you just try to not think about it and take your at-bat like you normally would.”
His team suffered a loss against the Pirates on Monday, 7-5, but everyone was clearly happy to see JT back in the batter’s box.
Most fans are happy, if a little conflicted
When the Boston Red Sox’s official Twitter page announced, “Love to see JT back and swinging it!”, some people got confused. Although the team’s fans have expressed concern about Turner’s condition before, some clearly didn’t understand who JT is.
