The Boston Red Sox had almost everyone fooled this off-season with their promise of acting aggressively. Don’t you think? And by the looks of how they were after Juan Soto, the story was almost bought. But look deeper and you’ll see that their off-season spending hasn’t been much to add strides to the roster. In total, it has been just around $52 million. Compare that to the New York Mets’ $919 million. Now, that’s aggressive!
Sure, they have signed talented players like Garret Crochet and Walker Buehler. And even Aroldis Chapman and Justin Wilson. However, where is the big bat? Top free agents like Alex Bregman and even Tanner Scott are still in the market. Yet, with just over four weeks till spring training, they haven’t signed anyone to build their offense yet. And as if those big promises said and not done weren’t enough, Boston Red Sox president Sam Kennedy makes some more claims.
Sam Kennedy’s big forecast of Boston’s 2025 season

Sam Kennedy was at the NESN show, and he talked about everything from the Red Sox losses, the new additions, and what he expects in the 2025 season. He displayed a lot of excitement about how the team has formed, even calling it a “sustainable” group for the future. For him, getting Garrett was a no-brainer and a deal he didn’t think would come to life. And also the fact that more players were coming off the IL excited Kennedy even more. But then, he dropped some major claims for this year.
Sam Kennedy: “Pitching was clearly the priority this offseason. We still have work to do, obviously… we’re excited about a team that’s going to win over 90 games, and hopefully win that division.”@TomCaron | @LouMerloni | #RedSox pic.twitter.com/4XkEIv7PcC

Sam Kennedy didn’t hold back on the Boston Red Sox’s expectations of 2025. “We’re excited about a team that’s going to win over 90 games and hopefully win the division and get us into the postseason.” Well, for a team sans a big bat, this is a huge claim to make. Not to mention, the Red Sox are in probably the toughest division in baseball.
They have teams like the New York Yankees and even the Baltimore Orioles to compete against. And everyone has seen the strides the Yanks took this off-season. And much like the Boston Red Sox, they were in a similar boat after losing Juan Soto. But they added key pieces to make a well-rounded team. The Orioles, too, are a young and dynamic team. So even if Boston did improve, they are still at best the third-best in this league.
The Red Sox are the same team that used to dominate the opening-day payroll rankings. Now they just seem to be penny-pinching. ESPN’s Jeff Passan even called them out for losing their identity. But would Boston take notice of what insiders and fans really want?
Will the Boston Red Sox make a move on Alex Bregman?
The Boston Red Sox have made some moves, but mostly to bolster their off-season. They are still far from the competitive balance tax threshold. And fans are still wondering if the right time would ever come for the team to spend. Now one player who has been linked to them is Alex Bregman. The Red Sox manager Alex Cora has expressed his love for Breggy, saying he is a great fit. But so far there is no sign of signing!

Ken Rosenthal from the Athletic talked about this and said clearly the Red Sox are playing a waiting game. Much like how the Mets are playing with Pete Alonso. Rosenthal said, “The Boston Red Sox’s seeming resistance to Alex Bregman makes sense only if the team is playing a game of chicken with agent Scott Boras, believing Bregman won’t go to Toronto and the Detroit Tigers won’t pay him.” To put it simply, they are waiting for Bregman’s price to drop as the market dries further. There are risks, but as long as they sign him, it’s all that matters.
Rosenthal didn’t mince his words, saying, “They are not better than the New York Yankees and probably not better than the Baltimore Orioles.” Well, it’s harsh, but looking at the reality of the roster, this is the reality.
