Did Scott Boras really drop the ball on Jordan Montgomery's free agency, or is Montgomery overreacting?

Have you ever missed out on an opportunity because of someone else’s mistake? It’s incredibly frustrating, right? Well,  Jordan Montgomery can definitely relate. He recently found himself in this exact situation when his chance to sign with the Red Sox slipped away, all because of a mishap involving his agent, Scott Boras. If you think about it, Jordan Montgomery was the perfect fit for the Red Sox—a left-hander coming off a World Series win, which was exactly the kind of front-of-the-rotation upgrade they needed.

So, how did Montgomery end up missing out on the Red Sox? Well, now that he’s back in Boston for the first time this season, he’s been open about it. All he really wanted was to be a part of the Red Sox and was super excited to join them.  But even though everything was looking to be smooth, destiny had something else planned and the deal never got materialized. You must be wondering if everything went alright why did he sign with another team? Montgomery points the finger at his former agent, Scott Boras, for mishandling his free agency.

Signing with another team was quite a shocker for the 31-year-old baseball star, according to whom everything went well with the Sox:” I had a Zoom call with (the Red Sox), that’s really all I know. It went good,” Jordan said. “I don’t know. Obviously, Boras butchered it, so I’m just trying to move on from the offseason and forget it.” He also revealed that he never got an official deal from the Sox, as from what he knows. However, he would have definitely considered signing them if they actually proposed.

During the offseason, he was already in Boston with his wife. “It would have been awesome if it had worked out that way, but it didn’t,”  Indeed, Jordan was disappointed, but he wasn’t feeling this alone; three other baseball players could totally relate to him. Boras other high-profile clients, left-hander Blake Snell, outfielder Cody Bellinger, and third baseman Matt Chapman, were all expected to snag big deals this past offseason. But, despite the hype, they stayed unsigned well into the offseason.

Seeing this it won’t be wrong to say that it’s been a tough season for Boras’ clients all around! All of them ended up with short-term contracts instead of what they were hoping for. Also, out of all the four clients, Montgomery was the last to sign a deal. Maybe he was waiting for the Red Sox? However, as weeks passed without any deal in hand, he eventually signed a one-year, $25 million deal with the Diamondbacks. What could have been a standout season with the Red Sox turned out to be quite the season of struggle for the 31-year-old left-hander, which has led to many losses for him too.

On the other hand, because he Signed with the Diamondbacks right around Opening Day, he didn’t have much time for formal spring training. His missing out on this much-needed training before his debut was quite evident on the field, where he posted a rough 6.44 ERA over 95 innings. And you know what the saddest part?  Now, the team’s moving him from the starting rotation to the bullpen.  Imagine the mishap annihilated his numbers and value to such an extent that he went from being a World Series pitcher to now a bullpen one in no time.

On the flip side, Montgomery made a big move by firing Scott Boras and switching to Wasserman, a rival agency. This could open up new opportunities for him in the future, leading to better deals and career advancements. As for how the season might have turned out with the Red Sox, it’s hard to say for sure. If things had gone smoothly, he could have enjoyed a strong season in Boston, where he and his wife already felt at home. And maybe he gets to sign them next season, who knows?
