The drama surrounding Pete Alonso’s uncertain future has taken an intriguing turn. Currently, there are reports of the Mets considering a trade for the Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to land the power-hitting first baseman. According to The Athletic’s Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal, the market for Alonso is heating up, with at least three teams, including the Blue Jays, showing serious interest.

But the real twist came when SNY’s Andy Martino revealed that the Mets had actually “checked in” on Vlad Guerrero Jr.’s availability. Fans are understandably in an uproar, fearing that their beloved Vladdy could be exchanged with Alonso, sparking a heated debate on social media. Blue Jays fans are *furious*, with many taking to X to express their frustration. It’s easy to see why!

Guerrero has been the face of the franchise since his debut. Obviously! He is a generational talent with a bat capable of launching baseballs into orbit. The idea of trading him for another 1B — no matter how talented Alonso may be — feels like a slap in the face to a fanbase that has poured so much love. And while Alonso would undoubtedly add pop to the Blue Jays’ already potent lineup, the optics of swapping Guerrero, who’s just 25, for a 30-year-old slugger is hard for fans to swallow.

There’s also the issue of positional redundancy. Both Alonso and Guerrero Jr. primarily play first base, and even though Toronto could theoretically rotate them between first base and DH, the fit doesn’t seem ideal. Guerrero is already an established superstar with sky-high potential, while Alonso, for all his power, is already entering the tail end of his prime. Is adding Alonso worth the risk of losing a future MVP candidate? Fans certainly don’t think so.

Fan reactions to trade Vladdy

The Blue Jays have a ticking clock because Guerrero’s hard deadline for a contract extension is after the 2025 season. Since there isn’t a long-term contract in sight, many supporters believe that management is prepared for the possibility that Guerrero may go for a higher salary elsewhere.

If the the Blue Jays were to trade a cornerstone player like Guerrero, many fans believe it would be driven by financial considerations or a reluctance to meet his contract demands, rather than a genuine effort to improve the roster. Ownership’s influence has often been a source of frustration for fans in markets like Toronto, where economic constraints sometimes seem to hold the team back from making the best baseball decisions.

These reactions are tied to a mix of uncertainty about the Blue Jays’ financial situation, fear of losing their star player, and frustration with how the team is handling its roster decisions.
