The Toronto Blue Jays are working hard to regroup after a disastrous week saw them lose both of their targets – Shohei Ohtani and the Dominican Slugger Juan Soto. The team desperately needs a left-handed hitter, and the pool is quite small. But fortunately, there remains a big star like Cody Bellinger in the market and the Blue Jays are going all in on him. Will this flight of the Blue Birds reach its destination? If it does, is the Chicago Cubs’ boat set to sink?
Bellinger’s free agency has been a rather curious case. The hitter had a remarkable comeback, but doubts still linger over his long-term potential. One of the teams that does love him is his former team Chicago Cubs, but will the Blue Jays going for Bellinger ruin their chances of getting some love from Cody?

While rumors were swirling around that the Blue Birds were approaching Bellinger, the social media post by his fiance only increased that noise. Though the Blue Jays need a star as well as a left-handed hitter, no confirmations came. Now famous insider Jon Heyman from the New York Post has revealed in that the links are, in fact, true. He wrote, “The Blue Jays are expected to be a player for star outfielder Cody Bellinger now that they’ve lost out for Shohei Ohtani (and missed their opportunity for Juan Soto).”
Earlier in the week, there were reports that the Chicago Cubs were willing to wait it out, hoping that Cody Love’s lack of strong offers would lower his price point. The current strategy may not be entirely viable, given the presence of formidable competition. Moreover, this competition possesses the financial capability to present a substantial contract.
The Blue Jays’ close miss of Ohtani hurt them. Yet it can’t be denied that they seemingly became a negotiation tool by the end of their pursuit. Now they want to move past that embarrassment by going for a player of Bellinger’s capability. He slashed .307/.356/.525 in one of his career-best years. But Bellinger did do all of that in the Chicago Cubs, who he notably really likes.

The Cubs’ Relationship with Cody Love
Jon Heyman, in a recent interview with MLB network, also shared that Cody Bellinger loves many things about the Chi-Town. “He’s (Bellinger) loved the hitting coach, he’s loved the area.” Bellinger enjoys the organization of the Cubs as well. As a result, a reunion could’ve been on the cards.

On the other hand, even though the North Siders love him, they are unwilling to spend over $200 million for Bellinger due to his erratic performances in the past 4 years. Now, with competition from the Blue Jays, the Cubs have a lot to worry about.
