Blake Snell is arguably the best pitcher left in free agency right now. Following a special 2023 season, he earned his second Cy Young Award, this one in the National League. But now, as he and super agent Scott Boras negotiate free agency, things are getting complicated as Snell makes his demands known.
There are few quality pitchers left on the market, and Snell stands atop. Furthermore, the trade market is expensive, with teams avoiding trading for top hurlers. Despite all of this, Snell might be making unreasonable demands in a market where teams seem reluctant to spend big.

Blake Snell was strongly linked to the New York Yankees at first. This was unsurprising considering the Bombers’ crucial need for pitching depth. But in a recent report, the Yankees apparently had a $150 million bid for the lefty ace rejected. MLB insider Mike Rodriguez even provided details, saying that Snell wanted a deal more than the massive $150 million offer.
Source familiar with the situation just told me the Yankees offer was $30M a year, 5 years deal $150M Total money. But Snell rejected because he want more money or one more year. #Yankees #BlakeSnell pic.twitter.com/CcWuRcOOO4

His X post read, “Source familiar with the situation just told me the Yankees offer was $30M a year, 5 years deal $150M Total money. But Snell rejected because he want more money or one more year”. This 5-year $150 million deal would have had a $30 million AAV. But Snell wanted either more money or a longer contract. The Yankees refused to meet this demand, likely given his history of inconsistency.
Now the 2023 NL Cy Young winner’s price is out there but it seems that not many teams want to pay it. This is not too surprising considering that the clubs in the market may not have the kind of money Snell desires. Furthermore, there are questions about whether his agent Scott Boras may have waited too long.

Has Snell’s market dried up?
The Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and Los Angeles Angels seemed to be favorites for Blake Snell early in the off-season. But when Yoshinobu Yamamoto snubbed the Yankees to join the Dodgers, the pinstripes wanted the lefty ace. Now with the Bombers having signed Marcus Stroman and the Angels seemingly pursuing budget options, Snell’s market is slowing down.
