In 2014, Derek Jeter shocked fans by announcing that he would retire after the 2014 season. This stunned fans and experts around the world. But in May of that year, he answered questions about his future during an interview with extratv. In it, he talked about how he was not interested in management or coaching because of the travel. But Jeter did say that he was interested in ownership. When asked if he would try to buy the Yankees, he jokingly asked the reporter if she’d give him a loan, because the team was too expensive for him to buy.

During the interview, Jeter said, “I would like to be in the ownership side, I like to call the shots. You know, I couldn’t see myself being a coach or a manager because of the travel. I think the travel is very difficult, and a lot of don’t realize how difficult the travel is. Once again I’m not complaining, it just gets old after a while so I can’t see myself doing that. But, I’d like to call the shots.” When asked about buying the Bronx Bombers, he said, “I mean if you loan me some money, maybe I’d have an opportunity to own this team. It’s a very expensive team.”

This was an honest remark from the former Yankees legend as he shut down the possibility of owning the team. But he did eventually buy an MLB team, the Miami Marlins, in 2017. He was part of the ownership group and acted as CEO until February last year when he stepped down.

Why did Jeter leave the Marlins’ ownership group?

Derek Jeter shocked baseball fans and experts when he stepped down as Miami Marlins CEO last year. The former Yankees legend said that the direction of the team had changed since he joined and it was not what he had signed up for. Furthermore, after stepping down as CEO, he also sold his stake in the team. This was a big move, considering how keen the Yankees legend had been to buy the Marlins.
