Jose Canseco was one of the best hitters in Major League Baseball. Having played for over 17 years of professional baseball, Canseco entertained an era. However, the two-time World Series winner had some hard times in his post-retirement life.

During his baseball career, Canseco played for over half a dozen MLB franchises. But he played his best game for the Oakland Athletics. Even though Canseco was a successful hitter of the game, his career was full of controversies. For a guy who earned millions of dollars from his baseball career, Canseco lost it all.

He was part of the historic Athletics team that won the World Series in 1989. Canseco is one of the very few players who have played for the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. He even won a World Series with the Yankees. Recently, the MLB legend detailed how he lost all his earnings.

Jose Canseco once had only 20 dollars in his pocket

It is hard to believe that a player who played 17 years of professional sports went broke. According to the man himself, he once lived in a garage for six months because of his financial crisis. Jose Canseco even lost all the money that he made from a book he had written, “Juiced.”

 

“Well, people don’t know this but after that time I had a really bad time… Had twenty dollars in my pocket and lived in a garage for about six months…,” Canseco revealed. “I went through a really hard time when I wrote the book, Juiced. I made millions, invested that money in a property, and lost that.”

“But after that, there was a period of time when no one would talk to me at all. No one dealt with me, no one hired me. And financially I was strapped.”

The Athletics legend also revealed that a few of his bad decisions led him to lose all the money.

“I think the amount we come up with is about $55 million… I can tell you exactly every red cent went to. It’s funny, you got to start with taxes, right away 40%. You got to start with divorces that are $7 million. Bad investments, family, friends, it can go really quickly…,” Canseco added.

With 462 home runs, Jose Canseco is already a legend of the game. He had a dream career in MLB. Because not everyone gets to play for the Yankees and Red Sox in one lifetime. Wherever he went, Canseco created his legacy.
