The deep quiet that surrounds the free agency of Cody Bellinger has worried most fans. Although linked with many teams, those links haven’t progressed much since. Even though Cody Love is super agent Scott Boras’ client, it seems his market is shrinking instead of expanding. Could all of this benefit the Chicago Cubs in fostering a massive homecoming?
While the Cubs have always been in the running for Bellinger, they’ve chosen the path of waiting instead of going all out at once. Hoping to capitalize on a thin market for the slugger, their strategy might be working. Recent comments from Boras hint at his interest in getting a deal with the North Siders.

Although Cody Bellinger is also linked to the Toronto Blue Jays, it seems Scott Boras is placing more of his bets on the Cubs. But even he seems to be tiring of Chicago’s slow approach. His feelings became visible on the Inside The Clubhouse podcast, where he tried to encourage the Cubs to make more efforts for his client.
Talking about ambitions, he said that teams must go after free agents while they’re available. “You’ve got to make sure that you can illustrate to your fan base that you want to win. If you don’t get these players, they’re not going to be available in the next free-agent market”. This message was seemingly directed at the Cubbies, who have been reluctant to match Bellinger’s demands.
On the other hand, Boras also tried to sell to the North Siders how much his client loved playing in Chicago. Saying Bellinger “enjoyed” being a Cub, Boras hoped that the team would “meet the competitive nature of the league to compete for the best players and have a good team.”

It’s understandable why the super agent is hedging his bets on the Cubs, as last year Bellinger finally tasted success after three disastrous years with the Dodgers. Even though most of the league doubts his longevity, the Cubs are the ones who know how useful Bellinger can be. Cody Love needs them too, as his market seems light on teams as of now.
The shrinking affection for Bellinger
There are only two teams in the Bellinger race currently – the Cubs and Blue Jays. For a player who was once an MVP, this looks like a very small pool but there is a reason for it. The terrible 2020-22 added to his unsatisfactory numbers in 2023.

Even though Bellinger’s overall stats were good, underlying numbers paint a different story. The slugger is no longer the hard hitter he once was, choosing to sacrifice that for consistent hits. Additionally, his injury history makes a long-term deal a big risk. Which team has the appetite for that kind of risk?
