The more recent news in the MLB market has brought some news teams to light. With the Dodgers always being the star on the stage some other teams like Huston Astros and Boston Red Sox have joined them. This just made the market even more interesting because Alex Bregman is a star in the market and is waiting for someone to grab him. When this news broke out, it came to light that the Astors owner might take steps to ensure that Alex Bregman stays back in Huston.

It is known that Alex Bregman is on the market after his contract expired after the 2024 season. But who will sign him is still a question. The two main teams are the Houston Astros and the Boston Red Sox. But the one thing we have learnt from this market is, never to count out the Dodgers. Even though they are not the favorites to sign Alex Bregman, they might have a chance to nab him. But to prevent this from happening, the Astros owner, Jim Crane, might look to break the bank to resign Alex Bregman.

In a recent interview on Foul Territory, we heard from Chandler Rome about the same topic. This is what he said about the owner and his thinking, “In Jim Crane’s ownership tenure, it really has been that he has been okay to pay the luxury tax. It just has to be for a move that he determines as kind of the thing that puts the cherry on top, the real meaningful addition.” This shows that Jim Crane will only spend big bucks if he thinks that the player would make a valuable addition to the team. If not he would like to stay below the limit and not spend any money on luxury tax.

Chandler Rome also went on to say this about the situation of Alex Bregman, “And I think what Alex Bregman, what Alex Bregman means to this franchise, what Alex Bregman has meant to this golden era and what Alex Bregman means in that clubhouse. You guys saw how vocal Jose Altuve was all season at the end of the season about retaining him, would not be surprised if they kind of throw caution to the wind and say, you know what? We’ll cross it for Alex Bregman.”

With all the players like Jose Altuve making their point clear that they want Alex Bregman in the Astros next season might have an effect. And even without that, what Alex Bregman meant to the club and the staff might just tip the scale in his favor. This might lead Jim Cranes to spend a little more on Alex Bregman and make him a Huston Astro again.

But if they miss out on this, with Max Muncy as a free agent the Dodgers might nab him, and it still looks like a concrete possibility. So, whatever the Red Sox and the Astros are going to do they have to do it quickly or both of them might lose out on this and might just hand the award to the Dodgers.

Can the Astros afford to lose Bregman, or is he the heart of their golden era?

The 2025 MLB free-agent market has been busy, with some of the sport’s biggest names signing new deals. Japanese ace Roki Sasaki went to the Los Angeles Dodgers to strengthen their rotation. The Dodgers also added another reliever, Tanner Scott, to their bullpen. The New York Mets re-signed outfielder Jesse Winker and the Arizona Diamondbacks signed ace Corbin Burnes to improve their pitching.

One of the biggest free agents in this market is Pete Alonso. Pete Alonso was a major source of power for the Mets and is reportedly negotiating a 3-year deal with them with an opt-out clause. The Mets also will want to sign Alonso who averaged 38 home runs for his first six seasons.

Pitcher Jack Flaherty, who put together a 13-7 record and 3.17 ERA in 2024, was surprised not to receive many calls from teams in free agency. Flaherty spent most of the tail end of 2024 in Los Angeles playing for the Dodgers and said that he would be happy to get back to where he started the year, which was with the Detroit Tigers. It’s difficult to see it happening, however, as Detroit made some interesting acquisitions recently.
