Alex Bregman is one curious case of not getting signed despite having offers! The list is getting even longer with the reports of the Cubs getting into his contention. From the time Bregman entered the free agency, the Red Sox, Astros, and the Tigers were making all the noises and now, the Cubs seem like a dark horse in this race. The chances with the Cubs are getting higher because they have landed a few Astros players this offseason.

The best offer Bregman has received as of now is from the Astros for six years, which is worth $156 million. Rejecting this offer, Bregman pointed out his intention of not getting settled on anything same or less than that and only a team offering a higher amount and years can land him. The rumor mill suggests that the Cubs have a chance to sign him. But there’s a catch. He has to let go of his demand for a long-term contract. However, if that is the case, then are the Cubs really a genuine potential destination for Bregman?

The Cubs are now in contention

This offseason has witnessed a few tradings from the Astros to the Cubs, including Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly, and considering the rapport between Pressly and Bregman, the Cubs can be the dark horse here. As of now, Alex Bregman hasn’t confirmed his intention to get into a short-term deal and if confirmed, the Cubs could be all aggressive to go for him. Moreover, the Cubs have a genuine need for someone like Bregman. Why? Well, they recently traded Isaac Paredes to the Astros and got a vacancy at 3B.

Till now, the Astros were the only team offering Bregman his staple 3B position that kept them ahead in the contention, now with the Cubs about to offer the same position, things might get tricky for the Astros. Well, even though the Cubs have yet to make any confirmation regarding landing Bregman, they have some financial strain here. They already went above the luxury tax threshold and a $500k penalty is on the table, making them scale back investment this year. Thus, landing Bregman with an exorbitant price is unlikely for them, except the Cubs are desperate enough to get him.

Bregman flooded with offers

What’s your perspective on:

Will Bregman's high demands leave him teamless, or will the Cubs make a surprising move?

Have an interesting take?

For Bregman, it’s raining offers albeit none of them are meeting his expectations. The highest offer is still from the Astros, while the Red Sox and Tigers are not willing to get him for the long term. So what’s left for him in this last minute of the offseason? A short-term deal with high AAV can do magic here! Bregman and his agent Scott Boras are looking for extended years and higher AAV, which is not possible in the current scenario and he needs to go with only one at a time. So, opting for a shorter period with higher AAV can match the financial expectations of Bregman and he can hit the free agency soon to fetch a better deal later.

The current scenario is not favorable enough for Bregman to ask something north of $200 million for a longer period. The recent signing of Jurickson Profar also gave a reality check about why a short-term deal with high AAV is the flavor of this season. The spring season is about to start and sticking with such high expectations can leave Bregman without a team. He has two options here, one to go with the Astros’ offer or opt for a short-term deal. However, the entry of the Cubs and a better deal from them can shuffle up the entire sweepstake scenario.
