Alex Bregman remains one of the biggest free agents still on the market, with his consistent play and two World Series rings making him an incredibly valuable commodity. He’s reportedly not interested in a short-term deal, instead aiming for a longer commitment that reflects his ambition for career achievements. Several teams, including the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, and his longtime club, the Houston Astros, are linked to him as the offseason rolls on.

Now Bregman has a lot of history with Houston, and why wont he? The third baseman has spent eight years in the franchise. The 30-year-old has helped the Astros in many ways including winning a World Series for the team. That is why, the club is so keen on bringing him back. But for that, the squad needs to make heavy changes in their line up. One MLB insider put his thoughts out on how the club could achieve that.

Bringing Alex Bregman back would require major shifts in the Astros

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal recently shared some insight into the Alex Bregman situation in a video released by Foul Territory Network. Rosenthal explained that while Astros fans are eager for Bregman’s return, the team is actively working to make that happen. “Their fans want Alex Bregman back and the Astros are trying, If Alex Bregman goes back, apparently he plays third, they’d move Paredes to second and José Altuve would play left.” José Altuve himself echoed that sentiment during the Astros’ fan festival, showing he’s willing to do whatever it takes to keep his teammate in Houston.

“For Alex, I’ll do whatever,” Altuve said. “He’s one of the best players in the whole league and he’s definitely one of the best players on the team. We want him to stay so whatever I have to do for him to stay, I’m willing to do it.” Altuve and the Astros are fully committed to making this work, even if it means shaking up the lineup. Other than position changes, the club has another major problem, which is payroll. To free up some payroll space, Houston has been eyeing to trade a veteran reliever.

Ryan Pressly has been asked to say yes to trade

After being acquired by the Astros during the 2018 season, the 36-year-old, has been a reliable presence in Houston’s bullpen. He made an immediate impression, taking over as the team’s closer in 2020 and going on to record an incredible 111 saves. Pressly has received two All-Star selections (2019 and 2021) for his composure under pressure, but his postseason background is what truly makes him stand out. Prior to last year, he made 14 of his first saves in the playoffs, including the historic save that secured Houston’s victory in Game 6 of the 2022 World Series.

What’s your perspective on:

Will the Astros' lineup shakeup be worth it to bring back Alex Bregman?

Have an interesting take?

According to sources who spoke to MLB.com on Friday, the Houston Astros are requesting that veteran reliever Ryan Pressly consent to a trade to the Cubs. Hold on, though, as Pressly hasn’t really approved the deal yet. Pressly is keeping his cards close to the vest and his no-trade clause (which is protected by his 10-and-5 rights) is still in effect, despite rumors that a deal was “on the verge” of happening Thursday night.

What made the move? The Astros signed Josh Hader last season to take over the closer position, so it’s clear that Pressly may be leaving as he enters the final year of a $14 million contract. By cutting Pressly’s pay, the Astros may be able to add another bat to their lineup and free up some cash. In addition, despite already adding Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes to the infield mix, the Astros is considering a reunion with free agency third baseman Alex Bregman.
