Alex Bregman is in the news again! The Houston Astros have been trying to get him, and now, another club has come up with a similar offer—the Detroit Tigers. Bregman is looking for a long-term contract worth something above $200 million, which the Astros are not willing to offer. While the Astros remain the first choice, given that Alex already rejected their $156 million deal, the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Toronto Blue Jays are also interested in acquiring him.

Despite his incredible record of 375/.490/.750, 1.240 OPS, and leading the Astros to World Series titles in 2017 and 2022, the likelihood of a reunion remains uncertain between Alex Bregman and the Astros. Soon to be 31 years old in March, Bregman’s disagreement over the deal has raised a lot of questions regarding his performance in the upcoming couple of years, thus making this move look further unlikely.

On February 1, Houston Sports Director Will Kunkel shared on his X handle, “The odds of the Astros signing Alex Bregman are “LOW,” per source. For what it’s worth, last week the odds were ‘VERY LOW’.” Will sees the growing stalemates between the Astros and Bregman, and his sweepstakes have gone down further. So, does it mean Bregman’s time is over?

Well, definitely not, given that Alex Bregman has a six-year offer on the table from the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers have been trying to negotiate with Alex Bregman regarding the asking price and have offered a six-year deal that is quite similar to what the Astros offered earlier. The deal, though, must be valued slightly more to ensure that Bregman feels happy with it and does not reject it like earlier.

Alex’s.366 on-base percentage and.272 hitting ability, along with his 26 homers and 75 runs in 145 games in the past year, make him a great bet, as the Tigers need a third baseman too. It would give them an added boost to their lineup, furthermore, allowing the Tigers to make a significant mark in the upcoming seasons. But that would finally end Bregman’s time with the Astros, wouldn’t it?

Is a reunion between the Astros and Alex Bregman still on the cards?

Ever since Alex Bregman declined the six-year, $156 million offer by the Houston Astros, he no longer seems to be the first choice for the club. The rejection of this substantial offer indicates his aspirations for a better and longer-term offer, which decreases the Astros’ chances of getting him back. Well, in that case, the Astros may have to boost their offer for the 3B. But that seems unlikely with the Houston team already naming Isaac Paredes as a potential replacement for Bregman.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Alex Bregman worth the $200 million gamble, or are the Astros right to let him go?

The 3B, Isaac Paredes, has come off a lukewarm season where he posted.739 OPS and 2.9 WAR compared to Bregman’s.768 OPS and 4.1 WAR. Although the stats don’t show much difference, Paredes’ batting ability might come in handy for the Astros at Daikin Park. However, that does not make him superior to Alex, who contributes in both directions and has demonstrated far greater discipline in baseball plate approaches. The Astros will try to turn things around as soon as possible because their veteran core is getting worse every year and their opponents are getting better quickly.
