The Houston Astros have been extremely active in the trade market this off-season after sending their star Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs. Their next agenda seemed to be signing their franchise’s heart—Alex Bregman—back. They mentioned it was on the priority list for several weeks. But, well, Alex Bregman commands a huge payday, and it’s probably too massive to pay for owner Jim Crane. This is because Crane hasn’t paid any player above $151 million ever. Plus, Crane always looks for a 6+ year contract deal.

Bergman, as per many sources, wants a $200 million deal, so Jim Crane might have to sweeten the contract or scoot past. And it seems like they are ready for the latter. Chandler Rome of the Athletic reported that the Houston Astros are serious suitors for Nolan Arenado. Rome also said that Cardinals, John Mozeliak acknowledged he “intends to try” moving Arenado.” So, it’s more than just a rumor; it’s like a looming reality coming soon. Astros fans, whether you hate it or despise it, a change might be just around the corner.

Astros change paths and now are chasing Nolan Arenado

Things seem to have changed after the winter meetings, and it’s getting rather interesting. Now, Nolan Arenado seems to be a top priority for the Houston Astros. And here is where things get interesting—Arenado has $52 million left on his deal, and the St. Louis Cardinals seem willing to eat $20 million to make that trade happen. This means nearly 40% of his remaining salary would be covered, and it can be a deal for the Astros. But what happens with Alex Bregman?

The Astros simply might not have the money to commit their homegrown star. In a recent interview, Chandler Rome says, “It does seem like [the Astros] don’t have the appetite to pay him the sort of money that he is going to command.” Now the Houston Astros already offered Alex Bregman a six-year, $156 million extension, but that number seems more like a placeholder than a quote for serious negotiation. Plus many think the Houston Astros simply can’t say they don’t need Bregman, it’s bad PR!

If Houston signs Nolan Arenado instead of shelling out $200 million on Bregman, they could bring in two pitching prospects like Adrian Kouba and Zach Blubaugh. The Astros, that way, save money and have an elite player at third base. As far as Arenado’s no-trade clause, reports do suggest he is open to reconsidering.

What’s your perspective on:

Astros fans, would you welcome Arenado with open arms, or is Bregman the true heart of the team?

Bergman to Yankees? His wife drops a hint

New York Yankee Brian Cashman has confirmed his interest in free agent Alex Bregman. He admitted that he had talked with Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras. Plus, Cashman even praised the third baseman’s winning pedigree and the impact he commands as a player, calling him a “thorn in our side.” On paper, it makes sense; the Yankees need an infielder, and Gleyber Torres and Anthony Rizzo are unlikely to make a return. But an Astros player coming in isn’t without complications.

In the real world, Alex Bregman coming to the Yankees would bring in past baggage. MLB Network’s Harold Reynolds mentioned, “I just think that you can’t overlook that there is bad blood there.” Well, the Astros cheating scandal that shocked everyone in 2017 is still fresh in the Yankees minds. In the past, fans have jeered at Astros stars like Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa.

The New York Yankees have been vocal that their championship title was essentially stolen by the Astros. Reynolds also mentioned that if Alex Bregman starts slow, then the Bronx might not show him any mercy. But if it’s hot, then maybe the fans can warm up to him real quick. Plus, recently, his wife, Reagan Elizabeth, posted a family photo on Instagram. The image was good, but the song she chose was the New York Jazz Trio.
