Right now, the offseason buzz is wondering what’s up with Pete Alonso. Some just want him to re-sign with the New York Mets; others hope Scott Boras will stop playing the waiting game and get the deal done! The reality is that Alonso, a star player for the New York Mets for over six years, has no apparent home in sight for the next season, but this wouldn’t have been his situation at all.
In 2023 itself, Pete Alonso would have settled in further with the team he feels at home with because they gave him a stellar offer—a seven-year deal for $158 million. But Pete and Scott Boras are fishing for $200 million and fewer years, and this is the major tip-off point, according to Jon Heyman. The journalist mentioned that there is a gap not just in money but also in the contract years. Heyman also put forth that while the Mets and Alonso seem like options, the Angels can be another option.

On the B/R Walkoff podcast this week, MLB insider Jon Heyman from the New York Post mentioned that the Los Angeles Angels have shown some interest in Alonso. However, even here, there seems to be a major BUT forming, and that’s yet again the gap when it comes to the length of the contract.
Jon Heyman says the #Angels are “looking at” Pete Alonso, but there seems to be a gap in years.
“I do believe Arte Moreno wants to get another big bat in there. And they would move Schanuel out to LF if they were to do that. I think Santander is probably a little more likely.” pic.twitter.com/yIryvxBGZv

“I do believe Arte Moreno wants to get another big bat in there,” Heyman noted, adding the Angels could shift Nolan Schaneul to the left field to make room for Pete Alonso. However, Heyman ended his take by saying that for him, Anthony Santander, another free agent, makes more sense in the lineup, given the main problem with Alonso and the amount and number of years is his age.
Pete Alonso is 30 years old, and a long contract can be risky. Moreover, players often decline when they reach their 30s, and Alonso’s numbers this year haven’t been stellar. Pete has a .240 batting average and a .329 on-base percentage, easily his career-worst, with a .788 OPS. So, getting a massive contract seems hard, plus, the Angels are coming off a rough season with a 63-99 record; they wouldn’t want to maybe risk it out with a player who won’t be performing their best. But Heyman isn’t the only one who feels that Anthony Santander fits well with the Angels.
Angels looking to Anthony Santander to boost outfield
The Los Angeles Angels are busy this off-season because they know they need to do better. They have a serious interest in Anthony Santander. The outfielder, fresh off a stellar year, has been on several radars this off-season. MLB insider Robert Murray shared that the Angel’s interest in him isn’t a rumor but real. “I can say the Angels have interest in Santander. He’s drawing plenty of interest; that much I know. I don’t know if anything is imminent. But I can indeed say the Angels are interested, yeah,” Murray explained in the Baseball Insiders podcast.

Anthony Santander has had a great season, slugging 44 home runs and even getting his first All-Star. He had a good barrel rate and hard-hit rate, and his ability to hit from both sides is a major plus, as it shows he is more than just a power hitter. This is also the reason he is one of the most sought-after talents this off-season. More so now that Teoscar Hernández and Juan Soto are off the market.

The Angels are working to bolster their lineup, and it shows. Trading for slugger Jorge Soler and adding Travis d’Arnaud and Scott Kingery shows they want to add depth. If they sign Santander, he fits really well at right field with Mike Trout and Taylor Ward in the outfield. So, if balance is what they need, then Anthony is the man for the team.
Right now, nothing is set in stone; Pete Alonso could go back to the Mets, he could sign with the Angels, or head to another team. What do you think will happen? Share with us below.
