The present owner of the New York Yankees is infamous for caring more about the team’s finances than its form. Billionare Hal Steinbrenner recently headlined the news to comment on the salary caps implemented by MLB. Yankees fans do not really like Hal’s logical approach in a game that’s mostly based on passion and statistics. What many fail to see is that Hal took a $1.6 billion team and turned it into a $7.1 billion powerhouse. The Yankees did not win any championship rings under his reign; but his time with the team isn’t over just yet. Is there a chance for the baseball kings of the ‘90s to reclaim their glory in the coming few seasons?

Hal might just turn out to be one of the winningest owners in the history of the MLB if he can just rope himself into the requirements of the team, along with his supreme financial knowledge. On that note, it becomes necessary to look into the history of Hal’s achievements beyond the realm of the diamond and what else works under Hal’s ownership.

A few years ago, Hal Steinbrenner and his company, Yankee Global Enterprises, tied up with the Manchester City Football Club to acquire a 20% hold on Major League Soccer’s twentieth expansion club. They named the club ‘New York City FC” (NYCFC) and were inducted into the MLS scene back in 2015. The team went on to win the MLS Champions Cup and the Campeones Cup in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Hal’s involvement has proven to be fruitful, even though MCFC owns the rest of the 80% stake in the team. Can one be bold enough to hope that the Yankees see a similar future with him? Apart from NYCFC, Hal owns a 10% stake in the legendary Italian soccer team AC Milan. The man seems to love soccer.

How long since he has been in Yankees Ownership?

George ‘the Boss’ Steinbrenner transferred the helm of his ‘first child’ to his sons, Hal and Hank, in 2007. Hal took complete ownership of the team by 2008; but it wasn’t until 2010 that he came to make independent executive decisions for the team following his father’s demise.

Hal Steinbrenner’s New York Yankees journey so far

The phrase “Like Father, Like Son” cannot be applied to the dynamic that existed between Hal and his dad. George always had the last say on every little thing related to the team. One of the many instances of that was seen during his first two decades with the team; he hired and fired around 20 managers to secure wins for the club.

Fans all around the world don’t like how Hal is so impersonal with the players. He often gives motivational speeches, but they seem light compared to George’s motivational actions. Speaking of that, George’s way of ‘Pep-Talks’ wouldn’t have been enjoyable for 21st-century Yankees fans. One of his many ‘mysterious’ techniques to keep the team on their toes was to send messages to the players via newspapers or verbally assault the ones stuck in a rut.

Comparatively, Hal handles things more professionally. He was never really interested in George’s passion regarding the team; it shows in how he maintains a cordial relationship with the present players. He might not be as personal with the game as his father; but Hal doesn’t refrain from seeking advice from veterans or ex-Yankees members while making big changes, unlike his father. He looks for a more tactical way to approach any ongoing controversies regarding the team, which is highly different from his father’s habit of dealing with similar issues headfirst and putting his resources to the use of the players.

Giving multiple chances to some of the down-bad sluggers in the team (remember his stint with Gooden?) was also one of George’s traits; comparatively, Hal often likes to replace the ones who aren’t useful to the team’s wellbeing, bringing the question of ‘loyalty’ into the fans’ minds. As seen in his support for Aaron Boone when almost the entire world wanted to see him get fired, he likes to take a very professional approach to controversies. Hal Steinbrenner also has a lot of faith in his players, although he might not be very outspoken about it. He once commented on how being old doesn’t mean one cannot play, vouching for the older players, stating, “These aren’t aging players; these guys are in their primes”, back in 2021.

The Yankees have seen approximately 1221 wins under Hal’s leadership. Their winning percentage to date stands at .569 – the highest amongst any other team in MLB history. The Yankees made seven playoffs with six playoff series wins and a 56.3% win rate in the last ten seasons under Hal’s reign. Per Forbes, the team saw 18% growth in valuation since the last year; they brought in about $143 million in media revenue in the last season and have remained the top-valued team in MLB since 1998. Hal cannot be doing everything wrong to have such an outcome, can he?

Hal Steinbrenner takes a very calm and calculated approach to decision-making; he weighs the risks as much as the gains, as opposed to George’s fiery, heart-to-heart, ready-to-strike trigger-finger approach. He brings a certain stability to the team concerning employee turnover and limited expenditures. What the fans need to see now is whether Hal points out and matches up with what the team needs to thrive on right now.

What are his plans for the future? Does he want to step down from his role?

According to a Sportsnet report, Hal is making some necessary personnel changes to the team very soon, although he’s not being very clear about what they are going to be. The team recently had a meeting in Florida attended by 15 officials; Steinbrenner labeled it a little dicey but respectful discussion. He is also planning on pursuing an improvement in the runs taken for the next season.

Equipped with his financial prowess, calculated moves, and an ability to see a bigger picture, Hal doesn’t seem very likely to step down from his Yankees throne anytime soon. Now whether that proves to be fruitful for the Bronx Bombers is certainly a question that’ll stay up for debate till their next big-league win.
