No one can unsee the New York Yankees scorching start. One of the biggest reasons for them to achieve this is their young shortstop, Anthony Volpe. However, just a few days prior to his amazing performance, a stomach bug had Volpe fearing the worst. So much so that he felt “Really bad,” about his illness admittedly. But that hasn’t prevented him from delivering a stunning performance that has Yankee fans, and the baseball world, drooling.
Though Volpe’s gut wasn’t at its best, his bat certainly was. Against the Arizona Diamondbacks, he went a perfect 4-for-4, displaying a newfound approach at the plate. With line drives, sharp singles, and a hustle play that resulted in a run – Volpe’s repertoire was on fully showcased. Mind you, this wasn’t a one-game wonder.

Despite his limited appearance this season due to his illness, the 22-year-old has swung at just three pitches outside the strike zone. Isn’t that a remarkable plate discipline display? His transformation has been so evident that even Manager Aaron Boone could not hold himself back from being elusive in his praise. Boone said, that he is a “way better” hitter than he was in his rookie season. What’s his secret to this transformation?

The reality is that he has worked on revamping this swing. In 2023, Volpe’s limited swing path led to a high strikeout rate. But as he worked on extending his swing path in the offseason, he is presently able to handle a far wider range of pitches and various locations.
Captain Aaron Judge too noticed this transformation. All Rise, upon witnessing Volpe’s new swing in spring training, said, “Dang, He’s gonna have a great year.” The 31-year-old captain sees the benefit in Volpe’s extended bat path, permitting him to give a better reaction to different pitches and even adjust mid-swing.

With a deeper lineup around him and the pressure eased, Volpe is thriving. His .800 batting average and impeccable plate discipline are only the tip of the iceberg. On one hand, it is early to conclude that Volpe’s performance will be consistent. On the other, it’s worth wondering – has breakout season arrived? If yes, it is here to stay?
