Where will Anthony Rizzo play this year? Well, it seems Rizzo has been uninterested in him being jobless till now. While he faced a downward trend in his performance in the last 2 years, Rizzo still boasts one of the best defenses in the business. Yet, that might not be enough for the Yankees to retain him.

So, will he find a new home this year? Or has the time come to hang up the boots? Amid his retirement speculation, his last year’s figures do not offer much hope, even if he has some gas left to accelerate. 

In his career, Rizzo has played 1,727 games, scoring 303 home runs and 965 RBIs. Before being injured by a broken arm, Rizzo finished the 2024 season really well. The three-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove Award winner has denied retirement speculations by stating that he plans to play in 2025. However, apart from his on-field future this year, Rizzo is more excited about his fatherhood. Reportedly, he and his wife, Emily Vakos, are expecting their first child. 

“I hope he knows when he comes out probably smelling like olive oil because Emily’s Greek, and you know we’re probably gonna baptize him in some marinara sauce,” Rizzo joked in a podcast with The Mayor’s Office with Sean Casey.

It’s something amazing for the couple to look forward to. They met when Rizzo played for the Chicago Cubs. But becoming his partner was a tall order for Emily at first. She knew the spotlight followed her wherever she went.

“I’ll be picking out bananas and then I’ll find him doing a photo shoot with the entire Whole Foods,” she narrated a tale. “We walk into places and the next thing you know we’re saying hello and taking pictures,” Rizzo added. “It’s great to do that, but [sometimes we’re just] trying to go on a date.” Yes, sometimes becoming a celebrity has its negatives.

This shows how much Rizzo is away from his on-field action, while more eager to enjoy his fatherhood. However, what lies ahead for Anthony Rizzo’s career? Will the fans be able to see him anywhere this year? There are rumors about a few teams interested in Rizzo, but nothing concrete yet. 

What does the future hold for Anthony Rizzo?

The Cubs are rumored to be the front-runner in getting Anthony Rizzo. However, will that make any sense for the team? During his previous stint with the Cubs, Rizzo built a devoted following. Moreover, he helped the team win its first World Series in 2016 against the Cleveland Guardians.

Additionally, he performed exceptionally well throughout the regular season, going from 2014 to 2016 with three straight seasons with a WAR of 5.6 or above. However, the Cubs already have Michael Busch and veteran Justin Turner as first base options. Thus, they might find it difficult to provide Rizzo with regular playing time if he signs with his old team.

Well, for the Cubs, it would make sense only if Anthony Rizzo could take a mentorship role. Yes, his on-field action might not be of no-use for the Cubs, while his experience can benefit the young players. That might be his best remaining option since it doesn’t seem like many MLB clubs are very interested in his services. So, what will Rizzo decide? He can join the Cubs as a mentor, or he may not have any teams this year. The current scenario indicates this. 

Fans hope Rizzo becomes a proud father and lands a new home this year. His on-field action is something to treat to watch, even at this age.
