The New York Yankees have seen some strange plays, but the case of Anthony Rizzo was probably the strangest. It was one of the most bizarre turnarounds of the season as he went from star first baseman to flop slugger. He described the feeling as one of playing with a hangover, when in fact he hadn’t touched a drop of alcohol. Then, as it turned out, the foggy feeling was a concussion after-effect.
Back on May 28th, Rizzo had collided with Fernando Tatis Jr. of the San Diego Padres, and the Yankees somehow missed the aftermath’s results. Then, on August 3rd, Rizzo finally went on the 10-day IL post-concussion syndrome. But there may be an encouraging update in the works.

The slugger’s latest doctor’s appointment went well, according to The New York Post, and may see exciting updates in the next week. Although he has not taken part in baseball activities yet, Rizzo has been making appearances at Yankee games. Ahead of the team’s victory against the Miami Marlins on Friday, Rizzo spoke to The Post.

“I was playing on this for two months, so if I think it’s going to go away in a week, it’s wishful thinking,” he said at LoanDepot Park. “But there are definitely signs of progress. Just one day at a time.” He also added that next week might bring more field activities, but a return to pinstripes does not yet have a fixed timeline.
Brain injuries are no small matter, so of course it’s going to take some time to recover. Slow and steady wins the race though, and Rizzo is moving ahead. It might be too much to hope for, though, to see Rizzo return to the field against the much-anticipated game against the Atlanta Braves on Monday.

Per The Post, Rizzo has yet to pick up a bat and practice hitting. It seems unclear whether the Yankees will send him to Triple-A for some rehab activities once he recovers. But Rizzo’s not worried about going from zero to one hundred if he has to. “I’ve gone weeks without hitting and ramped up quickly,” he said.

All fans can hope for now is that the slugger gets medically cleared as soon as possible. Because amid an already poor offensive display, now even the defense is struggling. It has been a season of injuries, one after the other, with the pitching staff also depleted.
