Here’s a new twist in Pete Alonso’s sweepstakes! Up until now, the Mets were expected to be the front-runner in landing Alonso but they are gone now, and here come the Angels. The LA Angels are predicted to go behind Pete Alonso and consider offering a four-year deal worth $100 million. That’s something unexpected, considering Alonso’s market value was questioned by MLB insider Marc Luino previously when Santander got a five-year deal with the Blue Jays.

The Angels jumping into the mix is also a shock to fans, given that they weren’t even on the radar. But if this prediction pans out, it will show the team’s renewed competitive drive after a dismal performance last season. Now, the big question is: is Alonso the right fit for the Angels? Can he help turn things around after their rough year?

Pete Alonso is a perfect fit for the Angels

The prediction of offering $100 to Pete Alonso shows the desperation of the Angels in fielding a contending team this year. Apart from this, the activity shown by the Angels this off-season reflects their seriousness in going bigger after a record-breaking poor performance. For context, the Angels lost 99 games and haven’t made the postseason in the last 10 years. But here’s the twist—by signing 12 free agents this offseason, the Angels are sending a different message. They’re going all in for a big 2025.

Adding 12 free agents in a single season is not an easy feat, and can be considered that the Angels have filled their major gap positions, yet they are still in search of a few big-league baseball players. Someone with tons of experience and who can pull off high-leverage situations with his charisma. Enter Pete Alonso! Coming with 192 HRs and 499 RBIs from five seasons, Alonso is the most logical fit here. Add him to a lineup already featuring Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon, and suddenly, fans can start dreaming about the postseason again.

However, if the Angels want to contend in 2025 — which their front office has made it known they do — they need to make another splash. Alonso would be just that. The Angels need another true threat in the lineup next to Mike Trout, and the 30-year-old Alonso fits that bill,” wrote MLB insider Noah Camras. So, Alonso is going to be a HALO player for the Angels who can add the required strength to the basemen. Considering how the Angels are going this year, fans can bet on them to end the unwanted streak.

Angels 2.0 is in the making

Angels 2.0, that’s defines the approach they have taken this year by going for aggressive signings and investing big. For the unversed, their GM Minasian committed $32 to next season’s payroll. Their buying spree is far from over and they are looking for some more additions to ensure proper backup considering how they were badly affected last year due to Trout’s injuries. Reacting to the same, MLB analyst Ken Rosenthal said, “The Angels are in play for a number of the remaining free agents”. So yes, the prediction regarding Alonso is just a step away from being true. But, time is short to get Alonso.

Alonso is reportedly in serious talks with the Blue Jays, so the Angels will have to move fast to secure him. With Alonso generating enough buzz at the last minute, chances are high that he will be poached. While Scott Boras is his agent who is known for making outrageous deals, time is ticking for the Angels to get Alonso. Apart from Santander and Alonso, there’s no big name left in the free agency and again it’s up to the Angels to tap any of these names in minimum time.

For the past ten years, it was a challenging time for the Angels’ fans with nothing to boast about. Now with making the right moves, the team is looking for a comeback and their intentions are evident. Nevertheless, there’s no one better than Alonso available currently who can lead the comeback journey for the Angels or fans can say Angels 2.0.
