Baseball games are lethal. It’s not just aggressive plays by the athletes on the field; in addition to injuries here and there, loss of life can occur too. At the recent match-up between the Cleveland Guardians and the Chicago White Sox, Will Brennan was up against Jesse Scholtens. It was the top of the second inning and as Scholten launched a 92.6 mph pitch at Brennan, the Guardians player hit the ball at 100.1 mph. Straight at a bird. It’s the second such incident in less than a week, and after the Cleveland team’s 3-0 victory, the Guardians player took to Twitter to apologize.

Will Brennan apologizes to bird enthusiasts for accidentally hitting one

Major League Baseball has generally had a good relationship with birds. After all, three teams take their names after bird varieties – the Toronto Blue Jays, the Baltimore Orioles, and the St. Louis Cardinals. But the Cleveland Guardians don’t seem to be going in the same direction. However, when popular baseball podcaster Jared Carrabis tweeted a clip of the moment with the caption, “How many birds have to die before they ban the game of baseball? Enough is enough”, Brennan responded.

“I truly am sorry @peta and bird enthusiasts. An unfortunate sacrifice”, he retweeted. The first such incident this week took place when Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen accidentally hit a bird while warming up before a game. It also brings to mind the infamous Randy Johnson incident from 2001, when a dove came right onto a ball’s path that the former pitcher had thrown.

Of course, this is a serious situation for many but not everyone seems to have taken it like that. Just the fact that it was Carrabis who posted about it begs the question of solemnity. While some think precautions are necessary to keep the feathered population safe, most didn’t think much of it.

Cleveland Guardians fans flock together to mock the moment

Carrabis’ tweet got a lot of mixed reactions from fans, mostly hilarious. And when Brennan apologized, a majority of fans reacted similarly where they acknowledged the bird’s sacrifice.

One fan pointed out how the Guardians’ next games are against the ‘bird teams’.

Some joked that Randy Johnson would be proud.
