Derek Jeter, because of his outstanding career in the Bronx, went on to become one of the greatest shortstops in MLB history. There have been many rumors about the former shortstop during his career, but rumors are rumors after all. The ex-Yankee also never got involved in any scandal. He successfully kept his personal life separate from his professional life.

His reputation in the two decades playing for the Bronx Bombers would have been squeaky clean. But it wasn’t only because of a scar worth 70 grand that was put on his reputation. That flaw, to this day, stands to be the only thing that stopped Jeter from having a clean-cut reputation.

Did Derek Jeter cheat someone out of $70,000?

According to the state officials, Jeter has “cheated” New York of millions as he claimed his official residence was in Tampa, Florida, and not in NYC. But apparently, that was not true, as Jeter had bought a $13 million apartment at Trump World Tower in 2001.

From 2001 to the next three years, Michigan’s star said to have his permanent residence in Tampa, which has no state income tax. But he was living in his bachelor pad in the Big Apple. Therefore, the NYC state officials sought $70,000 a year in taxes from 2001 to 03.

The case had gone to court, but apparently, the state officials and Jeter had settled the matter outside the courthouse. The reasons for settling bent towards Jeter having a slim chance if the case had gone to trial.

Was Jeter not able to afford to pay the taxes?

By the time the former Yankee bought the bachelor pad, he had already become one of the highest-paid players in MLB. When the case emerged in 2007, Jeter was earning somewhat around $20 million a year only by wearing the Pinstripes.

Considering that the three-year state taxes would not even be close to a million dollars, Jeter could pay the taxes. And who knows, he may have paid all of them as he settled the matter without going to court.
