The Boston Red Sox are under the spotlight yet again! As the drama around Alex Bregman and Rafael Devers at third base continues, Bregman has made his intention clear about winning and not just anything else, mentioning that he is willing to play anywhere the team wants him to play. The former Houston Astros’ All-Star and Gold Glove-winning third baseman joined the Red Sox earlier this month; however, he was unsure about where to play.

Given Bregman’s strong relationship with Red Sox manager Alex Cora, they want to make sure that his position best serves the team’s interests. During a dinner at Cora’s rental house, both Bregman and Devers dismissed any reports about the drama ongoing between them regarding the third base position. Cora confirmed everything is going quite well with the infielders, as Bregma has been giving constructive opinions to Devers during the glove work at the training session.

On February 21, when asked about his position expectation on Underdog MLB, Alex Bregman said, “Our whole meeting in California at the beginning of the offseason was how are we going to win, that’s it. That’s what I wanted to know when I met with Bres, ownership, and AC: What’s our plan to win now?” Bregman dismissed any such tussle with Devers and confirmed that every discussion was just about winning the game.

He even mentioned that it doesn’t matter to him much where he played before; rather, he might play at second, third, or wherever the team wants him to play. Brgeman further exclaimed, “We’re not even talking about it,” making it clear that outside noise doesn’t matter much, and it all comes down to playing according to the best interests of the team. That’s it! But why did Alex Bregman choose a short-term offer? That remains a question! Is he looking to move out of the Red Sox soon?

Why did Alex Bregman consider a short-term deal with the Red Sox?

Right after the 2024 season with the Houston Astros, Alex Bregman became a free agent, but he wasn’t able to find any takers, as he looked for a long-term contract. After much negotiation, he finally signed with the Red Sox for a three-year, $120 million deal, with opt-out options available at the end of each season. The short-term contract seems like a reasonable choice because it allows him to search for a better offer, a different team, and possibly even a long-term deal.

Is Bregman's short-term deal a sign he's eyeing a future beyond the Red Sox?

Have an interesting take?

For a player of his caliber, who had an impressive 2024 record where Bregman slashed .260/. 315/. 453 across 145 games, with 635 plate appearances, and posting 30 doubles, 26 home runs, and 75 RBIs, looking for a long-term contract makes a lot of sense. Alex Bregman did receive additional offers from the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers, but the high average annual contract value was the primary factor in his decision to sign with the Red Sox. However, given that he is approaching 31 years and will be 33 years at the end of his current contract with the Red Sox, he may be able to get another great offer in 2027, along with the opt-out option being an added advantage.
