Alex Bregman is no more a priority for the Houston Astros. After spending 9 seasons with the team, he is now a free agent. In his search for a new home, the Mets have been in touch with him for quite a while now. But no decision has been made yet. However, they have landed the most prized free agent this season. Undoubtedly, the Mets are the winner of the offseason.
The team has been negotiating with Bregman, where the third baseman seeks something nearly up to $200 million. Besides, the Boston Red Sox is still a major suitor for him. What puts Boston in an advantageous position? They have a hitter-friendly park. However, there is one glitch. Unlike Hernández, Alex Bregman is not an outfielder. So, the Red Sox has to be creative to make room for the shortstop.
Bregman is a third baseman. His skills put him as one of the best defenders at the hot corner. The 30-year-old is also ready to shift to second if it calls for it. Bregman himself said that he’d be open to switching it up if the “right” situation came along. As per Fansided.com, there are rumors of moving Rafael Devers to first base. Now that would make it a bit smoother because Bregman still has plenty of prime left.

However, the 2023 season has not really been the New Mexico native’s finest. But there is no denying the fact that he is a consistent producer. His two World Series rings and the memory of some good October performances make it evident why the Red Sox would be interested. Well, Adames just picked up an $182 million deal in San Francisco, so expect the price on Bregman to go high too. But to really keep up with destination teams like the Yankees and Dodgers, you’ve got to throw down cash like they do! And bringing aboard someone like Bregman would be a solid investment.

Tigers still in talks for the third baseman’s services
Yes, communications are all underway. Apart from the Mets and the Boston Red Sox, the Detroit Tigers are reportedly pursuing Alex Bregman. According to the Detroit Free Press, both sides have continued to show interest, but there’s a bit of a disconnect. They cannot come to terms on what Bregman’s value is. Just recently, the Tigers added Gleyber Torres, another right-handed infielder, on a one-year, $15 million deal. While this move brings in a solid bat for second base, third base still remains open.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Tiger’s president of baseball operations, Scott Harris, kept things tight-lipped. “I can’t comment on any current free agent,” Harris said on December 27 about Alex Bregman. “I can just tell you we are already working to continue to get better.” he added. However, the Tigers are not yet ready to give a go ahead to Scott Boras‘ client’s demands. Why? Because apparently, Bregman is not in hot list.

Nearly 60 days have passed since the beginning of free agency. Other top players have found new teams. This has narrowed down Bregman’s potential suitors. And the Tigers are maintaining a cautious approach, not rushing into any decisions. They want to build a team that’s competitive in the long run. Clearly, that’s stopping them to exceed their budget for a single player.
