It’s one of those rare offseasons where a sizeable chunk of free agents are available even after New Year’s Day. The common thread tying most players is their agent, Scott Boras. With clients like Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman, and Blake Snell, the “Superagent” is sure to be the busiest man in baseball in the offseason from now on. But there’s one team that can surprisingly ease some of his work – The San Francisco Giants.

The Bay Bombers have not been able to convince free agents to come to the Bay area for the last few years. With the team already making one deal with Boras this year, there’s a huge possibility that they’re not done yet. Could the baseball world see a negotiation battle between the Giants and Boras soon?

The desperation of the Giants could benefit Blake Snell and Matt Chapman

Even though the Giants have a pretty good lineup, it’s undeniable that they could do with more. With the owner wanting to finally compete for the big prize, there’s a need for star players. Perhaps that’s why Jeff Passan of ESPN thinks that the San Francisco Giants could be the first one to the table with Boras for one of Snell or Chapman.

Passan wrote, “One team opposing organizations expect to sign at least one top-end Boras client: the San Francisco Giants…San Francisco needs talent badly, even after the addition of free agent Jung Hoo Lee…” Passan’s reasons for considering Chapman and Snell as primary targets were simple – they suit the Giants’ squad.

On one hand, the 2019 All-Star’s arrival could provide additional depth to the third base. With present third baseman J.D. Davis free to work as a DH, the hitting depth in the Giants would turn stronger than ever. Add to this Chapman’s defensive prowess, he could really change the shape of this squad.

On the other hand, Blake Snell needs no introduction. The two-time Cy Young winner would fit right in with Logan Webb and Alex Cobb. With less pressure to lead from the front, Snell could excel in a team like the SF Giants. As a consequence, it appears that a colossal negotiation between Boras and the Giants is on the cards.

How could the Bay Bombers and Boras treat this negotiation?

The Bay Bombers have money and intent and Boras knows it as well. “Whether it’s Chapman, Snell…the Giants have the money and incentive to make a splash”, wrote Jeff. At the same time, with both Snell and Chapman on the wrong side of thirty, this is a make-or-break contract for them.

So obviously it won’t be cheap for the Giants as they’ve already overpaid once this offseason. The Giants gave Boras’ client Lee Jung-Hoo a $113 million contract. Across the media, his price was estimated to be between $65 to $80 million. So it looks like the Giants have already seen the Boras magic once. But they don’t seem to mind, as the Giants’ hunger for a star far outweighs financial worries.
