The Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly eyeing other candidates for their 2024 roster in case their persuasion of the two-way phenomenon falls through. On the verge of heading into what can be termed the most interesting winter meetings in MLB’s history, the team intends to focus on their left field and third base positions.

The Toronto Blue Jays are actively participating in the free agency scene of the 2023 offseason. However, the Blue Birds seem to have learned from the past. Utilizing the chance to turn opportunity and flexibility into feasible goals, they have been eyeing players to trade for, like Juan Soto and Mike Trout, to name a few.

This is quite an intelligent move, considering all the big teams are chasing after Shohei Ohtani at this moment. Ohtani’s deal will make a “seismic shift” around the major league, The Athletic believes. With so many expectations set on the most sought-after player, it is only wise to keep backup plans.

The Blue Jays might not have enough free agency candidates to target for their vacant lineup positions. That should not stop them from seeking possible trades with other teams. Especially if the said team in question is facing a decline in form and fiduciary elements, it can be used to the Jays’ benefit.

That fact alone makes Juan Soto one of the best trade prospects for the Blue Birds. Soto’s current team, the Padres, has been going through a major fiscal feud this year. Adding him to the team will help the BJs fill their left fielder vacancy, along with an offensive boost on the left plate.

The Blue Jays have a projected payroll of $188 million for the upcoming season. The team had about $26 million’s worth of space coming off their $214 million payroll for this season. They can use this to hire players like Soto with a $33 million price tag if they shift things around. They can also go after sluggers like Mike Trout or Pete Alonso, for good reasons.

Trout is open to being traded if he lets it happen, his team says. If the Angels become serious about re-signing Ohtani, then they will have to make space on their payroll. This indicates Trout’s possible departure from his team due to the $259 million they still owe him. Having Trout will heavily transform the Toronto Blue Jays’ batting lineup for the next season.

Another prospect, Pete Alonso, is yet to obtain free agency. However, his team, the Mets, might be open to trade possibilities regardless of the year left on his contract. Getting him on their payroll will help the Blue Jays secure the damage power they have been lacking this year.
