This is the best MLB offseason for the fans and the teams. Several trades that are going to make a huge difference within the league happened while some went under the radar. However, it hasn’t been a good offseason for the Blue Jays; they haven’t been able to take care of any deals so far. This has led to several huge names slipping through their hands while their current star batter, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., is also uncertain of his future.
The Toronto Blue Jays are actively seeking free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman to fill their roster, following failed attempts to sign outfielder Juan Soto and former Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes.
Star slugger Pete Alonso is also reportedly in talks with the Jays, as he looks for a new home after turning down a three-year offer from the Mets. While Alonso’s market value better fits the Mets, his leverage and other alternative first-base options could push him to seek a long-term deal elsewhere, possibly in Toronto as reported on ESPN.

Alonso is the kind of talent that justifies a nine-figure deal, though only a small minority of MLB teams are going to be in a position to commit more than $25 million annually to the first baseman position. Time wears away at lengths for players whose deals are concluded during this same time frame of late February into late March as evidenced by two other Boras clients, Cody Bellinger and Blake Snell. This pattern does create questions about how long teams are going to have to wait and what Alonso’s ultimate destination may be.
Strategic additions to the Blue Jays roaster
The Blue Jays are interested in Bregman as they look to strengthen their infield as reported on ESPN by Buster Olney. The free-agent market has been slow in the MLB this offseason, leaving players like Bregman and Alonso in limbo. Bregman is one of the most sought-after talents, but his preference to play for other teams, such as the Detroit Tigers, could pose a hurdle for Toronto.
Despite these challenges, the Toronto Blue Jays clearly remain committed to making their team better. Teaming the players with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and a talent like Bregman will make the Blue Jays a force in the American League East. The bigger challenge continues to be getting big-time free agents to agree to join the team.
Pete Alonso’s potential availability brings an interesting layer to the strategy that the Blue Jays will undertake in their offseason. Bringing Alonso to the team would bring a proven slugger to Toronto, potentially easing pressure on Guerrero Jr. and really diversifying their offense. However, with Alonso’s market dynamics tending towards the Mets, the extent to which Toronto would be willing to match that price tag determines whether their offseason moves can truly nudge the team further into a championship-worthy roster.
