Dylan Cease to the Baltimore Orioles? It’s a possibility. Given that the Orioles lost one of their favorite players, Corbin Burnes, this offseason, the team needs an ace. Burnes was acquired last offseason by the Orioles from the Milwaukee Brewers. In the trade, Baltimore lost nearly 10 of its prospects. Later, extension talks failed, and Burnes became a free agent as a consequence.
Now that the club lost one of its ace pitchers, they need to find someone with almost the same level of production. Dylan Cease of the Padres comes out as an option. The San Diego Padres have been dealing with a lot of behind-the-scenes drama. The team’s ownership seems to be in a bit of a tiff with the late Peter Seidler’s wife filing a lawsuit against her brothers-in-law, who manage the team.

MLB insider does not see the Padres trading Dylan Cease to the Orioles
Amongst all this ownership drama, will a trade for Dylan Cease with the Orioles be possible? One insider does not think so. In a recent episode of Foul Territory, Ken Rosenthal talks about one of the biggest trade candidates on the block. Rosenthal said, “I just don’t know if they (padres) see trading Cease, trading Michael King, trading Arraez, or even Robert Suarez, who is probably the most likely to go, is something that they need to do. We don’t know if they need to do it financially.”

Rosenthal also added that if the Padres do want to trade Cease, it would have to be along the lines somewhere around the Juan Soto trade. Now, the insider does not think that the team would get back THAT much, but the club would want a good amount back. The Orioles have guys that they could trade. However, according to Ken Rosenthal, he just doesn’t see it “coming together.” While we’re talking about pitchers, the Padres signed a Canadian baseball pitcher for four years.
San Diego makes a move by securing pitcher Nick Pivetta
The San Diego Padres kicked off their spring training in Peoria this week with a major move to address their starting rotation. As the team gathered for their first formal workout, they quickly made waves by securing right-hander Nick Pivetta with a four-year, $55 million deal. The deal, still pending a physical, includes opt-outs after both the 2026 and 2027 seasons, giving Pivetta some flexibility as he settles into San Diego.

With Pivetta coming on board, the Padres are hoping his consistency and experience will help anchor a staff that’s been a bit of a puzzle in recent years. He’ll earn a $3 million signing bonus, followed by a $1 million salary in 2025, and then the big bucks kick in with $19 million, $14 million, and $18 million in the next three seasons.
While the Padres’ offseason had been relatively quiet up to this point, Pivetta’s addition certainly adds a new layer of excitement and expectation. The move also raises some interesting questions: How will this impact the team’s other starters? Can Pivetta bring the same energy to San Diego that he showed with the Red Sox?
