The starting pitcher market is on fire as Blake Snell’s interest in the Houston Astros develops. With him on the radar of the Astros, the only top-tier pitcher on the free agent market remains Jordan Montgomery. Perhapsthis is a peculiar position to be in. The question that remains unanswered is: Is Boras the only Boras arm without a team as Opening Day approaches?

Snell, the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, flaunts an impeccable profile and a relatively hefty asking price. He’s reportedly seeking a three-year deal with opt-out clauses, similar to recent contracts for other Boras clients, Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman. From Boras Four, the total countdown has trickled down to 1.

Let’s break this down. Blake Snell’s contract interest aligns with the Astros’ current requirement for an established ace. The situation becomes even more important, particularly with Justin Verlander and other key pitchers sidelined with injuries. The Astros’ pursuit of the 31-year-old pitcher has intensified the free-agent market, considering both teams and the remaining pitchers are reevaluating their strategies. So, where does this leave Montgomery?

The southpaw had a solid season with the Texas Rangers in 2023, contributing to a World Series run. There have been reports suggesting that there is interest from the Rangers as well as the Boston Red Sox. Despite chatter, nothing has materialized yet. But here’s the curious aspect of this case:.

Montgomery’s asking price is similar to Snell’s. Scott Boras himself acknowledged the “pitching panic” that has bewildered the MLB teams due to injuries. While there has been an increased interest in elite starters like Snell, it is unknown why Montgomery’s talent is contributing to the delay in finding a landing spot.

With time running out, will Montgomery find a home before opening day?

Looking at the positive side of the scenario, one can’t help but notice that there’s still time. Of course, spring training injuries are a cruel reality. And one unaccounted-for elbow tweak for a potential suitor could shift the entire dynamics. Moreover, Montgomery’s postseason experience and his capability to eat innings still continue to make him an infatuating option for teams. He would be a great asset to teams prioritizing depth and consistency in their rotations.

The next few weeks are going to be crucial for both Monty and his agent as they seek to find a landing spot.
