Boone mentioned Alex Verdugo, though not initially. His acquisition from the Boston Red Sox displays an intriguing possibility. Thanks to his stats in 2023.Verdugo recorded solid .280 BA, .331 OBP, and .461 SLG. Moreover, one can’t underestimate his potential to vamp up the lineup in the ideal setup of the Yankee Stadium.

It makes sense why Boone mentioned him. Verdugo’s on-base percentage has consistently done better year on year, in 2023 reaching .331. This steady improvement makes him a reliable candidate for the leadoff spot. His 9.4% strikeout rate and 16 stolen bases this year are proof that he is a top asset. Additionally, Verdugo’s left-handed bat provides a balance of sorts to the right-handed heavy lineup. To the Yankees’ advantage this would derange the rhythm of opponent pitchers.

Sure, Verdugo’s emergence as a viable option adds another layer of intrigue to the Yankees’ leadoff decision. Apart from that surprise, Boone did have some steady choices. The Yankees skipper has already established his inclination to have Soto and Judge bat second and third respectively. It is guaranteed that this would create a double threat. Nevertheless, DJ LeMahieu and Gleyber Torres remain the frontrunners.

Predictably, the initial favorite for the leadoff spot was LeMahieu. Given his experience and consistent on-base skills, he is a safe bet. However, let’s not forget that his 101 wRC+ in 2023 was slightly underwhelming . Regardless of the setback, his resurgence could be a sign of optimism, potentially establishing his position at the lead.
