It is time for Brian Cashman’s annual ‘sleep out’ ritual. The GM of the esteemed franchise, New York Yankees is a man on a mission. Though there is severe criticism around the Yankees (not) making much-needed moves, Cashman takes a break from the hullabaloo to ground himself. Literally and figuratively.

What’s Cashman’s agenda, anyway? The movement’s ambition is to raise awareness for homeless youth. In 2022, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUAD) estimated that over 500,000 Americans had no home – raging problem indeed. Per the team’s official website, Cashman once expressed, “I have no idea how any human being possibly can do it for one night, let alone weeks on end”.

Though it is frigid, it will not stop the 56-year-old from doing what needs to be done! Note that this activity goes a long way in terms of raising money. Tonight Cashman will pitch his tent in Times Square, in support of the homeless. It is also commendable that the New York-born has spent one night per year on the streets for over a decade now. A gutsy commitment, that is.

This is a nationwide event that ideally raises over $10 million. A striking figure in times of absolute need for the cause for 582,000 people. In 2014, Cashman was candid about how he felt about the experience. His words were, “There’s no comfort on that ground. Even one night is terrible. With all the elements, with nature. It’s not right. No one should have to live like that”.

Cashman will be present at the yearly Global Sleep to End Youth Homelessness event, Covenant House. Among the celebrities who joined him in the past were singer Colton Ryan and NFL player Saquon Barkley. This event is held in 16 locations, not just in the US. This is just one of them.

Taking a break from the chatter and negativity surrounding Cashman’s recent words, he is all set to rest on his concrete bed with his arm for a pillow. But will he get a good night’s sleep considering his responsibilities about what’s going on out there with the Yankees?

One cannot tell, but as per Hal’s statements last week, there appeared to be work going on behind the scenes. While one awaits to hear about the progress with the Yankees, it is important to take a moment to appreciate what Cashman is doing for the needy.
