Petco Park is getting ready for a popular non-baseball occasion. The home ground of the San Diego Padres often hosts major events, including games and concerts. But what the Padres authorities planned to host in January 2024 is unique. Although they announced plans in September 2023, the team recently received a huge blow in the form of a legal notice. The worst part is that this notice appears at a time when the team is already going through a difficult time.
The Padres have been suffering a financial crisis. This has led to payroll cuts and rumors of trading players. The team with the third highest MLB payroll this year is also looking for budget cuts but an extra source of revenue may be cut off.

The Padres announced their historic Petco Park event around September 5. This was a collaboration event with the C5 Rodeo Co. and Outriders Present. While some were excited to witness the rodeo, not everyone was happy with it. PETA sent the team a legal notice stating their disapproval of the event. A recent X (formerly Twitter) post from Talking Friars shows the statements that PETA sent to the authorities as potent reasons to stop this activity.

The notice clearly stated that they got messages from the public about the rodeo and that they considered it harmful to the animals. The letter expressed, ?Rodeos are inherently inhumane and animal welfare is never a priority in these events.? Per the PETA official, organizers often use electric prods, sharp spurs, and bucking straps to irritate the animals to perform, which causes them pain and even severe injuries. Sometimes the result is even worse and the animal dies.
Furthermore, they labeled Rodeos as ?manipulative displays of human domination over other animals, thinly disguised as entertainment.? Given that the team has a significant young audience, the animal treatment could have a negative impact, prompting PETA to ask the Padres to cancel the event. Even the animal welfare department slammed C5 Rodeo?s claim to promote ethical treatment. They stated that a company claiming to promote equal treatment for humans and animals alike shouldn?t promote such cruelty.
The hit couldn’t have come at a worse time for a baseball team already going through monetary troubles. Their financial crisis is not a rumor anymore. As the loan amount came to light, things became clearer, highlighting the payroll cut issue further.

Fans have been speculating about the Padres trading their star players as part of salary cuts. In September, The Athletic reported that the team has taken out around $50 million loan to cover their payroll in the short term. While the club had a $97.2 million payroll in the 2019 MLB Season, they opened 2023 with $248.9 million, which is a franchise record.
The club drew record numbers of audience this season. Before they got eliminated, Petco Park attracted 3.27 million, which had not happened since 2004. However, not qualifying for the playoffs affected their revenue significantly. Ultimately, a loan to cover the expenses was the only answer.

Whether the payroll cut will happen or not is not confirmed, but the rodeo is now under government monitor. Petco Park probably won’t be able to host the event anymore.
