New York Yankees is not just a club, it’s an emotion that surfaces in the hearts and minds of everyone across the Empire State. With 27 World Championship Rings, 40 American League Pennants, and 20 East Division Titles, the Pinstripes have fashioned an extremely powerful atmosphere of fandom that erupts and cheers like there’s no tomorrow. And when Derek Jeter became captain, he carried the Yankee attitude and culture to a whole new level.

Derek Jeter’s influence was such that even fellow-shortstop and superstar Alex Rodriguez decided to move to The Bronx to play with Captain Clutch. And A-Rod made this decision despite knowing that he would have to change his position as Jeter had established his position at shortstop.

In a 2004 interview with Sports Illustrated, A-Rod spoke about how Derek Jeter’s mere presence impacted his decision to move into the Pinstripes. At that time, A-Rod was playing as a shortstop for the Texas Rangers. In the 2004 offseason, while Boston and New York competed in the Alex Rodriguez pursuit, the Yankee front office informed A-Rod that he would have to move to the third baseman.
While one would expect A-Rod’s ego to be hurt, it wasn’t. And he said, “It made perfect sense.”

A-Rod then moved to talk about the special Yankee culture, and said, “I began to think about the pinstripes. I felt the allure of the tradition and the opportunity to win and asked myself, ‘Why not do it?'”
Finally, A-Rod talks about his desire to play with his friend-turned-foe-turned-friend Derek Jeter. He says, “You know the best part? Getting there while I’m still young. And knowing I have seven years to play with Derek and set my legacy as far as being a part of Yankees history.”
Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter: A strange journey that fluctuated from friends and foes
A-Rod and Jeter first met in 1993 during a college baseball game. Since then, their journey has been victim to multiple ups and downs. Within a year’s distance, both the shortstops made their Major League debuts. And until 2000, the pair seemed to be on the best of terms and were often seen together. However, with the onset of record-breaking deals in 2000, when Jeter signed an extension with the Yanks and A-Rod planned his move to Texas, an ego clash occurred.
