The frenemy relationship between Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter is somewhat of a commoner’s lore around the Yankees clubhouse. Beginning with their MLB debut and playing together for the World Series, multitudes of emotions have grown and wilted away between the two. One instance, in particular, was instrumental in the duo’s decline in friendship.
Alex Rodriguez was reportedly on the verge of fighting an eminent TV and radio personality, Dan Patrick, after the latter revealed some unappealing comments made by A-Rod on his show. What A-Rod didn’t expect was a breach of confidentiality when it came to his long-time MLB partner and friend, Jeter.

In a podcast coverage of Barstool Sports’ Pardon My Take channel, Patrick revealed the complications incited by a controversial comment made by Alex Rodriguez. The Twitter (now X) video shared by PMT shows the host discussing how A-Rod criticized Jeter’s contract on his show.

Rodriguez commented on that, thinking he was off air, which was not the case. Hence, A-Rod was expected to plan on confronting the host regarding the revelation of the Jeter quip when he received another invitation for an interview with Patrick.
The incident that followed led to Patrick finding himself in the Rangers’ locker room, where he saw Rodriguez deep in conversation with teammate Mike Lamb. A-Rod made Patrick wait for a good 15 minutes before starting to yell at him. Patrick revealed that the discussion was made on the air to clear the air, although he was pretty confident that it would not change things.

Patrick thought Rodriguez was on the verge of hitting him. Unfortunately, though no such thing transpired, it ruined any semblance of amicability existing between A-Rod and Mr. November. The comment in question hurt Jeter because he did not harbor any imprudence toward his former best friend before. What did A-Rod say?

The questionable quip
Patrick asked Rodriguez who is most likely to beat his 2000s Rangers contract of $252 million for a ten-year tenure in an ESPN interview. He said that it definitely wouldn’t be Jeter. “I don’t know who it’s going to be,” A-Rod stated before making the explosive comment: “Even a guy like Derek, it’s going to be hard for him to break.” He could’ve stopped there. But he didn’t.
A-Rod decided to add salt to the wound of broken loyalty between friends by stating that Jeter neither has the talent nor the power numbers in defense to top the record Rodriguez made at such a young age. The rest was history.
